Oh well time for him to retire
I think he already retired from the Chronicle.
Well, this is disappointing. I did enjoy listening to him.
I’m sure some other station would pick him up.
Should just move to YouTube/Spotify and start his own thing. He has enough skin in the game to build his own platform instead of needing another radio station
Radio is a dying breed
I think he has other gigs still, just one less gig.
Hate to see free radio die off. Used to listen to WHO Des Moines Iowa as a tyke in Houston late night. They would have on Iowa Hawkeye replay.
Really? That is interesting.
Fellow Hawkeye here.
I have never enjoyed his radio voice. I also feel like his game picks are usually wrong. He has had a good and long career and should enjoy his retirement. I remember he came and spoke to our comm class one time.
My brain refuses to read the thread title properly, and I keep saying to myself… I thought John McCain was dead years ago… otherwise he would have been ALL UP In you-know-who’s face.
Was this person particularly beloved of the audience? Or noteworthy for being something of a tool? I’m curious.
Have a good one, Coogs ![]()
He was the long time beat writer for the Oilers and, later, the Texans for the Houston Chronicle. Just retired from it a couple years ago.
Some people liked him, some didn’t, as with most things in life. I tended to like him though.
And his career goes back even further than that.
He actually started as the Chronicle beat writer for the original WHA Houston Aeros with Gordie Howe back in the 1970s.
Personally, I liked his radio commentary, especially on football.
Sorry to see him go!
John has been the voice (written/verbal) of Houston sports for my whole life (41 yrs). I have been a fan for a long time.
Known John for many years. One of the honest good guys.
always wondered why he never moved to Waco since he’s such a Baylor honk
he’s never been consistent with his opinions on UH
Which kind of tracks our history, doesn’t it?
I feel like his heydey was when the Texans got started. I heard him on the radio more with John and Lance than at any other time. He’s a good story-teller, and he has a lot of 'em.
610 just created some night show 5 days a week so maybe he was cut for those guys (career radio fill in guys)
