Legendary Notre Dame, Arkansas coach Lou Holtz enters hospice care
Always liked Lou…
I started following Coach Holtz when he replaced Frank Broyles at Arkansas. He was always entertaining, in a quirky kind of way. He had a lot of coaching stops and made a lot of friends along the way.
Wishing Coach Holtz peace and comfort.
The 1974 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl game between the Lou Holtz led NC State Wolfpack and Houston ended in a 31-31 tie.
I remember sitting in the Loge level end zone seats cheering on the Cougars and confident of victory.
The Coogs led by two touchdowns in the closing minutes only to have NC State rally to tie the game. Needless to say I was stunned and disappointed with the outcome.
It was then my level of respect towards Lou Holtz was elevated.
Regarding Coach Holtz’s condition….
Unfortunately, hospice care due to advanced aging is the beginning of the end of life.
Aging is not a problem, it’s a normal reality of life. It’s the devastating effects of a deteriorating body that’s cruel.
Well wishes to Coach Holtz.
Hate to see it. He’s been around the game since I was a kid. All the best to him and his family.
Back in 2010, I was in NYC for business. I went across the street for a nightcap at an Irish bar. It was just me and him at the bar. He just landed from Japan and was going on Fox the next morning. He was drinking a white wine and eating pizza.
He asked me where I went to college, I told him U of H. For the next 2+ hours he educated me about Yeoman, Coogs, bowls, everything U of H. He gave me his card. I had the bartender take a pic. I printed it, sent it to him, he signed it and sent it to me! I have it framed in my game room.
Great. Can you post a picture?
Tough
What a GREAT story !
Wait.
I had to read that again…
He “gave you his car”?
Sorry to hear…He was always very pro UH on the college shows…a big Case Keenum fan…
Good story. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing.
Fixed it, card.
My prayers are with Coach Holtz. I’ll never forget the beat down (34-0) we took in Little Rock in 1977. That was a long ride home.
Good, good man. Mike Holovak of the Oilers were good friends. He was a majician, literally and one of the best talkers in sports. Was at NC State back in the day and of course the Hogs, ND…
Thanks for clarifying.
Not that him giving you “anything” matters at all to the awesomeness of the story.
I’ve had some really amazing interactions with famous people too.
It’s always good to see their humanity, up close and personal.
I remember watching his coach’s show when he was at Arkansas. Very entertaining, and educational with regards to the finer points of football.
I’ll always remember his quote after we beat Arkansas 21-9 in the Astrodome, “I’ll tell you, three touchdowns is going to beat three field goals every time.”
My dad played football with Coach Holtz at Kent State and they were fraternity brothers, as well. When he came into town for the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl to play UH, he arranged for my dad and I to meet the team at the old Astroworld Hotel, ride the team bus to Rice Stadium and be on the field for their practice. His son Skip and I were about the same age and we and some other coaches’ kids ended up playing touch football in one endzone as practice was winding down. One of my best memories as a kid and I’ll always be grateful to him for that experience. Was a big Arkansas fan when he was coaching there as a result.
