OT: More Proof UH Is Transforming to Traditional Campus

UH is never going to get “SEC” kids

UT-Austin doesn’t even have SEC culture. It’s really a B1G school in the south.

You will find SEC kids at A&M, SFA, Tech and even Texas State

When I was going to UH in the late 70’s, UH had a majority of white students, about 56% with Hispanic and Asian in 2nd and 3rd. Blacks were about 10%. UH has steadily lost white students and will continue to do so in my opinion. It seems most white students want to go to mostly white universities.

You can determine for yourselves the reason; but kids generally want to go to places that align more with themselves.

UT feels like the prototype of the Big 12 to me. I don’t see all that much more similarity between them and the B1G than I do the SEC. Same goes for OU.

If I’m not mistaken, A&M Galveston are known as the Sea Aggies. All the others are just known as simple land Aggies.

I’m certain that the A&M-Kingsville people don’t consider themselves “Aggies.”

Thing is Oklahoma and Texas aren’t really “the south”, but there are a few Texas schools such as the schools I mentioned above that get proto-south kids

UH can get there. It just takes commitment.

Some of 'em do. Others don’t. Midtown Manhattan is ludicrously expensive for a reason.

Uhhhh……come on now.

AAU public state flagships like UT are common in the B1G.

See Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Iowa for reference.

UT very much fits THAT profile:

A&M does have plans to pause enrollment increases for about 5 yrs. UT is tough to get into so we have a window of opportunity.

There’s more to campus culture than AAU status. UT’s campus feels A LOT more like Texas Tech or OU or even UH than it does Penn State.

University of Florida, Mizzou and UT-Austin are B1G schools in the SEC

Lsu is also an urban school despite what most think and in a bad area except to the east of campus with that beautiful man made lake and rich houses. The rest of the area near Lsu isn’t great. Lsu makes up ground by being the only major school and Sec really , really helps push them past any issues of neighborhood.

If we could clean up Scott st we could be ok bc 45 is a barrier along with the Spur and south of UH is great with rich houses.

Scott st and towards 59 is the issue.

Uhhhhh……no.

Just no.

Yeah. Nobody wants to talk about it. We definitely don’t have several threads thousands of pages long talking about changes that people want to make to Scott St.

TAMUCC are the Islanders, and A&M folks do NOT consider them Aggies. And the feeling is mutual with Islanders.

The handful of A&M Kingsville folks I know not only don’t consider themselves Aggies, but they still refer to themselves as Texas A&I.

And the fact that UH has a minority of white students also translates to the inner city…when I went to UH in the late '60s there were a whole lot more white folks living in the city, but that is not the case anymore.
I agree white kids are staying away from UH, so to solve that problem we need to get traditional Hispanic students, Asians and blacks. Just not sure many Asians and foreign students will ever become “traditional” students in any form…
I think most of us here just want UH to keep growing as a great institution of higher learning with great sports programs regardless of anyone’s skin color.

If you call oak lined boulevards, pretty homes, and a general lack of violent crimes boring, I’m for boring.
