Especially in the upper decks, I don’t think our ticket prices are an issue. UH Football is one of the cheapest entertainment options in town; we’re already a fraction of the price of most P4 schools. I don’t know how much lower we can go, and I can’t imagine there are a ton of people out there balking at, i.e., $33 for two tickets, like we had last week.
There just aren’t that many people interested in attending UH Football, at any price. That’s the thing we have to fix. Until we take care of that, we could probably give tickets away for free and still not pack the house.
Yes. All of those people who are driving to UT and A&M games who have never attended a class there in their life are refusing to come to UH games because they can’t stand to be around all of those stinky commuters. You’ve cracked the case, Sherlock!
Yea, there are posters that think that here, but if you look at our history, we’ve had attendance problems since the 60’s when the demographics were, ahem, different than today. I guess its easy an easy target.
Then, there’s the pictures of UT & ATM band members, cheer squads, season ticket holders, etc…which all seem to depict a 90%+ white composition.
And truthfully, the current UH season ticket holders also seem to reflect a strong majority white composition…but many are growing older (ie: a bit long-in-the-tooth).
UT today is a little less White than UH was in 2012. I don’t think UH feels like a radically different school, demographically, than it was 14 years ago. And certainly, whatever attendance or campus culture issues we have aren’t new ones in that timeframe.
Per “collegefactual” the reported number of white undergraduate students by school:
Texas A&M ~54,000 x ~57.8% = 31,000 white undergrads
Texas Tech ~30,000 x ~55% = 16,500 white undergrads
Univ. of Texas ~41,000 x ~36.6% = 15,000 white undergrads
Texas State ~30,000 x ~42% = 12,000 white undergrads
North Texas ~30,000 x ~41% = 10,000 white undergrads
Even TCU ~11,000 x ~67% = 7,000 white undergrads
Univ. of Houston ~29,000 x 21.1% = 6,000 white undergrads
So the other three P4 Texas state universities average more than 3X the number of white undergrad students as UH…and even Texas State & North Texas average nearly 2X as many.
And so it doesn’t look too promising to me for UH to be able to build up our future football fanbase without a really strong push from our Hispanic & Asian students & alumni and some other unaffiliated City of Houston residents.
End result is UT is dropping like a rock in white student population. Above says 36% and AI says 31 to 35% . Main point is even with the shift UT fills there stadium so I don’t believe diversity is holding us back but that the admin needs to do more to capture our alumni and get them into the stands. The students have been showing up the last 2 games. Again the AD needs to do better pricing bc mainly we struggle on filling the upper decks. Just do family packs for all upper decks/cheap seats.
Here we go with the “race” card. There is absolutely NOTHING racist about observing that ~90% of all P4 college football season ticket holders/fanbase are white…and then also acknowledging that UH has among the smallest number of P4 season ticket holders/fanbase.
And so while our student body diversity is a strength in many ways, the observable nationwide TV college football game fanbase evidence seems to suggest that it’s not too likely to help UH build up our college football season ticket holders/fanbase. Let’s hope that I’m proven wrong.
This is a statistic that you made up in your imagination.
Jumping to the conclusion that that problems that we’ve had since pre-integration and that have persisted across generations of demographic change come from the fact that our student body isn’t White enough is racist. Period. There’s no other way to spin that.
Yes, I am quite familiar with UH athletics history.
And I know that if only 100 students from each year’s class (since I graduated in 1974) would support UH football with 8 season tickets (like we do), we’d have to expand TDECU stadium.
[NOTE: 100 students/yr x 52 years = 5,200 ticket buyers x 8 tickets each = 41,600 season tickets sold plus ~6,000 students & ~2,400 visitors = ~50,000 folks in attendance at TDECU.]
