OT: NIL — Michigan Offers QB $10.5 million to Flip LSU Commitment

I ALWAYS said the likes of Ohio State, Texas , Oregon & Penn State would be huge NIL winners because they can fill BOTH buckets ( donations + marketing opportunities) !

Austin, Columbus, Philadelphia/, Pittsburgh & Portland are huge markets to get NIL marketing opportunities.

Lucky for us, Houston is poised to be one of the NIL darlings of the Big 12 once we find creative leadership to tap into the endless NIL opportunities in the Houston metro

Somehow no one has figured out a way to make UH an NIL darling.

Not sure why you are so optimistic.

To be an NIL darling, you have to have a huge number of rich fans that care about sports.

Not sure we qualify.

Not good

We don’t qualify because UH doesn’t have any new money donors. Most of our biggest donors (which is an extremely small circle) are near the end of their lives.

The other issue is that UH has to compete with professional sports teams for sponsors.

I recommend @UH1927 to go to Texans, Astros, or Rockets game, and then let us know if it makes any sense for corporations to partner with a university that can’t even fill its stadium half way.

The UH brand also lacks national recognition compared to schools like Ohio State, so it’s essentially a waste of money to partner with UH right now.

Just because UH is in a big city doesn’t mean everyone is dying to partner with UH for NIL.

And how do you propose it be cleaned up?

The NCAA desire to keep the field level for all 130 FBS schools was always going to be its undoing! The top 30 richest schools are worth more than the bottom 100 combined! The NCAA needed to create subdivisions with the well laid out criteria for membership. With scheduling between subdivisions permitted.

Creating one set of rules for all schools makes no sense. It was very unpopular with the tOSU, Texas’, Bama’ etc, who didn’t like small schools being treated as equals. And it kinda makes sense. A schools with $20M AD revenue has different interests than a school with 220M in AD revenue! So how can the same rules keep both happy?

Houston area Memorial Hermann and Chevron say “Hey, HELLO- what about us!!!”

That’s not really an NIL donation but it’s a good start

I’m talking about Bucket #2 where if done correctly (tapping into large/ medium/ small size businesses we can be a top 5 Bucket #2 NIL in the country)
If Tilman allows our athletes sponsorship opportunities to Golden Nugget/ Landrys, etc. , it is game over.

NIL doesn’t necessarily have to be about $$…it’s a creative way to form mutually beneficial value opportunities.

Many here only think about NIL in CAVEMAN terms…as if raising and offering money is the ONLY concession in a negotiation for a mutually beneficial deal…it IS NOT.

We have the #1 Entrepreneurship program in the nation for like a decade straight…we CAN come up with creative ways to make athletes WANT to play for the University of Houston and be linked to the City of Houston.

There is one major problem with your argument. NIL is not used for business purposes and marketing. It is used by fan as a way to pay players to join their school. Businesses doing business things do not fit there. If it was used for business marketing, then UH would be in a city that has many opportunities.

Fertita is not donating money to promote his businesses. He is doing it to satisfy his ego and wants for UH athletics. Phil Knight and Nike are not putting all that money into Oregon to promote Nike, it is because he wants Oregon to win as a fan. When Knight passes away, will all that money still be going to Oregon aside from anything left in the will? Will the next person in charge of Nike want to keep pushing all the money into one school NIL (esp if not an Oregon grad)?

From a business side, UH does not have the following (yet) to qualify for players to get a lot of money. Actually from a business side none of schools that do get big money are providing a return on the investment, it is just fan support to get players at their school.

They figured out how to f…mess it up and now they need to figure out how to fix it.

Also important to realize that the new revenue sharing next year will have a big or bigger impact than NIL. It is in addition to NIL. The rulings on that can help create a bigger divide or help balance, still to be seen.

Of course it is…NIL literally stands for NAME, IMAGE & LIKENESS which are marketing avenues open to College Athletes.

Present an athlete with a creative marketing opportunity to keep them playing for the University of Houston.

The recipe for building a successful playoff type squad in the NIL/Playoff era isn’t hard.

  1. Build a strong core nucleus and attempt to keep them together, possibly with NIL Bucket #2 resources. For quality good team players who may/ or may not be fringe pro- players, a Strong NIL Bucket #2 opportunity, as in the Chevron deal might be very tempting as they plan for their careers.

  2. Target select positions/holes for “star” players and use NIL Bucket #1 to land those players to complement/ strengthen the nucleus. These are the 4 or 5 star NFL type players.

Pro Sports use this model all of the time.

Even the MLS has 1 or 2 spots designated for “Star” level players (say an aging Donovan or Beckham or even Messi) and the rest were in that “core nucleus” group and they were paid 1/3 of the “star” designated player(s)

We need to start thinking of NIL in 2D terms and start thinking of creative ways to use it to our advantage to build a team in this era.

Again WE HAVE THE #1 ENTREPRENEURSHIP program in the United States.

Has our AD tapped into their creativity yet???

What return on the business is everyone getting that gives money to their schools collective? If a person on this board donates to the UH collective, what does that persons business get in return?

you are quoting intent of NIL (which I agree is good), but not actual use. When the NCAA verifies the use is actual NIL and not pay for play, then your statement will be correct.

Why do you think we fired Pez and hired Eddie.

Any reputable business, worth their grain of salt, has a marketing and a R & D allocation, as part of their annual budget.

The job of our AD, and Collective leaders, and indirectly our University is to find a mutually beneficial opportunity that benefits both parties.

Not all of the players on a P4 roster are NFL material…in fact the bulk ARE NOT!

We only have to find a way to keep a strong core nucleus of players at UH and something like the HOUSTON AREA Chevron partnership is one such example of an advantage we have over many schools. Many of these players want strong career connections, post graduation, and many of these companies want employees with strong leadership and team member traits like P4 football players.

Then we augment our team with select “premium- high $$” star players from our bucket #1 NIL pot

Chevron is just one example of the endless opportunities in a mega city like Houston…a city that has a GDP larger than most countries!

NIL allowed us to BLUR THE LINES…let’s be creative in blurring the lines!

How do you figure we will fall further?
What it takes is one donor, one donor to throw money our way.
Technically a g5 is now able to buy themselves a so called National Championship (ncaa does not recognize a football NC)
The hard part if to find that donor. Come on let’s go.
