What’s the argument against using these safer practice helmet designs in games? Is it more than inertia and aesthetics? I think I’ve seen them used at lower levels.
Part of the problem comes when players get a false sense of protection from concussions while using these padded helmets. They start hitting with their head down for the “bigger hit” and cause further head and neck injuries. Also most helmet companies say that any modifications to the helmet voids the warranty of the helmet.
I do get the “false sense of security” aspect (I learned it as “the rugby paradox” wherein they have less equipment and fewer injuries), though I don’t think that’s been the prevailing philosophy when it comes to protective gear. (There is an argument that it should.)
What you say about the warranty makes sense. You’d want the helmet designers to come up with the modification. Maybe they’re working on it now. I’d think there’d be good money in it.
