OT: Sam officially drew 671 for UTEP (no that's not hyperbole)

No way Alton McCaskill thought his career would end like this.

Way TOO MANY FBS teams in the state of Texas.

And for a state that allegedly Loves football
poor attendance everywhere

Me and my group were there.
Freezing cold, raining, bad team and thanksgiving weekend.
Low point.

How long have they been playing there? I thought their games were in Huntsville. I wonder if people not wanting to make the drive is the problem.

I think it’s just this season while they renovate their campus stadium. This was a losing proposition from the start, but they didn’t have much choice.

Just look at our basketball attendance at TSU, when we had a really good team and it was practically on campus.

A lot of Coogs do drive that far for home games

Their stadium is under reconstruction

And a lot more don’t.

The big thing is that people who go to games in Huntsville are not going to be excited about fighting Houston traffic to go to a downtown stadium. It wasn’t much of a change for our fanbase to move over there for a season, but we still had weaker crowds than at “regular” home games.

And on top of all of that, they’re just not competitive. It’s a rough situation.

It’s an hour away. Gimme a break.

It is an hour just from the Woodlands to downtown Houston. When we were going up to SH, it was an hour drive from Oak Forest to the dorms. That is traveling 70 mph or greater with far less traffic, back in 1964-65

I remember quite a few of their fans were against it when I read their message board. This was back when the CFP was four schools. Some wanted to stay FCS so they could actually make the playoffs and have a chance to play for a national championship instead of end their season with a trophy from “Dave’s Hot Dogs Bowl”.

It is all about money and COL issues.

I don’t know if you saw the recent report that was published by either Fortune or Kiplinger’s (can’t remember), but Texas and Florida are the most financially distressed states in America. I read that Florida schools are having similar attendance problems, so that tracks.

But that’s a place where a lot of their fanbase identities with other schools but they attend for whatever reason but very few become diehards

Also being at the lowest point in a G5 means ALL of your better players are going to be poached if they have any semblance of a decent season - I know one personally who told me straight up he’s playing to leave and did just that

That’s a hard place to be on the food chain

Two positives about that Louisville game is we won and it was the end of the Dimel.

Excuse me? Sam recently played and won a 1-AA natty in football. They are plenty capable of putting a good football team on the field. The transition takes time and there has to be a commitment on their part to be successful with it.

They were a very good 1-AA program but that doesn’t translate to success at the next level. I hope they can pull it off and not be a whipping post for the next 20 years.

If not, they need to pull an Idaho.

For example,

Idaho only went to FBS because Boise State was FBS. Idaho got demolished for decades and was basically kicked out of the Sun Belt twice. They went back to FCS and has been a contender ever since

Some schools just aren’t meant to play FBS ball

The confidence of youth.

Idaho was D1 from the 1920s to the 1970s. For a lot of those years the Vandals were conference mates with the big Oregon and Washington schools.

Idaho and Boise both jumped to FBS in 1996 after a Big West invite came after Fullerton State and Long Beach dropped football.

Texas? They have more money than Davey Crockett.
