Huge donation by Stanford Alumni and former football player, Bradford Freeman.
That equals one year of Tech NIL
People forget that Stanford has as much money as UT does
UT has a $47.5 billion endowment; Stanford has a $36.5 billion endowment.
I am one of those that believe there is no correlation between the size of endowment and football success. If that was the case, Rice would be beating the brains out of UH, and Texas, with the second largest endowment behind Harvard, would win the CFP every other year.
Both thoughts make me cringe.
Now imagine if one or two wealthy Rice alums did the same.
I don’t think many Rice alums really care about winning football. I bet they would go all in on the debate team or the science team that competes with others about machines of one kind or another.
Maybe being smart and well educated is strongly correlated with not liquidating your assets prematurely just to win 2 extra football games one year. Wealth is usually not in terms of cash on hand.
The one or two rich alums from Rice’s heyday - and I guess their AAC membership now - is the only reason they haven’t dropped football
I shudder.
Why wouldn’t that list include UT-Austin’s $20.85B?
Because it’s not an endowment it’s a sovereign wealth fund, like Norway or UAE
I’m sure I won’t change Rice or Standford Alums and/or BOR but Chancelor Khator knows the importance of Athletics highlighting a University. Both schools above, could use a pittance of their money to buy into the upper echlons of football and sustain it forever. It’s got to be arrogance. Has anyone ever mentioned you can be so smart as to be stupid?
You mean schools that don’t need help advertising the quality of their education to nerds who don’t care about football might not lean very heavily on football to attract those nerds?
I’ll never understand why people insist on introducing university endowments into discussions about football resources. It’s irrelevant.
There is no reason (other than charter policy) that money from an endowment fund can’t be used for support either students (which it does) or athletics.
Actually, I haven’t met any Stanford grads that do either.
They actually take pride in having gotten into Stanford as a non-jock.
No wonder they have sucked so hard for several straight seasons now.
Maybe this guy will be their new sugar daddy.
Do you know of any instance of university endowment funds being used to pay for athletics? I know that many schools have specific sports-related endowments, but they typically don’t send university endowment funds that direction.
USC supposedly has a fully endowed athletic department.
