Former Texas Longhorn, Chicago Bear, and professional wrestler Steve McMichael passed away today after a long struggle with ALS. McMichael was born in Houston and starred at Freer High School, in South Texas. McMichael played against UH 1976-1980.
RIP to McMichael and prayers to his family and friends.
I remember the classic ‘79 game. Texas had a great with McMichael and Acker at tackle. UH did as well with Hosea Taylor and Leonard Mitchell at tackle. The Coogs played hard but not well, turning it over three times and getting two punts blocked. Elston came in too late and Texas won 21-13.
As a freshman in ‘77, I lived down the hall from the freshmen / sophomores on the football team (yep, I started at UT, get over it). They could generally be divided into two groups, aholes and ok guys. He was one of the good ones, albeit a very large, ridiculously strong, and quick one. Was always glad for his success in the nfl.
Hate to learn that he had ALS. It’s a brutal disease. Lost a good friend to it in 16. An awful way to go. RIP Bam Bam
