Last time it was put to a vote on a ballet and it barely passed .
Right. So, this outrage that âThe taxpayer should have a say!!!â is funny. The taxpayer would vote on it if they actually do try and get a new stadium.
That seems like a terrible ballet.
Here is the question I have being a long time Houston Oilers and Houston Texans season ticket holder. Luxury suites was an issue Bud Adams raised with the Oilers. Everyone knows they are high revenue seating. Why wasnât NRG built with closer luxury suites? As far as I can tell, the argument hasnât changed in 25 years. NRG has luxury suites. They are simply not close enough to the field. Why wasnât NRG designed with that in mind?
Astros re-upped their lease already; new one goes until 2050 IIRC.
That said, as someone who drives past it every day, it could certainly use quite a bit of touch-up work.
Sounds like Bud and Jacksonville 2.0.
Field suites are a relatively new concept newer than NRG when it was built. NFL is a copycat league in many things including ways to generate revenue. Texans want some field suites cheddar. Simple as that.
I havenât read all of the articles, but I havenât seen anything saying the McNairâs are threatening to move the team.
I think a lot of this is sensationalism in the way modern headlines are crafted which I have complained about before on here, here are some article titles: âHouston Texans in talks over leaving stadium thatâs just 23 years old,â âTexans consider relocation due to massive stadium renovation hurdleâ. All I have seen from the Texansâ is, âAccording to two sources the Texans have explored the possibility of a new stadium.â That is them doing due diligence that is not them demanding a new stadium or talking to other cities.
Part of the issue as stated in one of the Chronicle articles is the Texans have a very team friendly deal, unlike the Astros and Rockets, the Texans donât have to pay most stadium maintenance costs and they receive more in tax rebates then they actually pay in rent. I am assuming that is why there is a lot of deferred maintenance, the county is just not doing it.
As far as moving cities the Texans are 12th with a value of $6.1 billion, whereas the Oilers, the team that chose to leave Houston, are 23rd with a value of $4.9 billion unless there is another untapped major market I donât think they are serious about moving, according to Forbes.
Look, the County has shirked itâs responsibility. You have to maintain and improve existing stadiums or you end up with the Astrodome. It looks like the County better DOGE and see what happed to the car rental and hotel taxes that were supposed to be dedicated to stadiums. One thing is for sure, car rentals & hotel room prices are higher than ever so there has to be some serious cash generated.
When politicians use government funds to funnel money to themselves, backers, and for favors, it goes fast. I have no proof, just speculation but I bet Iâm right.
Public schools would have enough budget as would roads, bridges, and NRG Stadium.
A political machine doesnât run itself.
I think that if there was ever a truly well run audit, weâd find plenty of public money finding its way to people it should not.
Harris county is massive - you want great infrastructure or a suites in a fb stadium that only the rich will buy?
âTeam friendly dealâ? If that is true this is on Harris County. Deferred maintenance or lack of maintenance? This is 23 years later. This lack of maintenance did not happen overnight. There is accountability for any specific maintenance, any work. An Harris County audit is not only overdue it is needed. Paramount that it happens for this contract and future contracts. The Texans complaining? Harris County is not a private entity. Emails, communications ought to be easy to find. I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden this is happening.
they canât even make a decision on the Astrodump lol
What is highly frustrating is that Harris County and HLSR approved:
Stadium renderings.
Architect plans
General contractors scope of work.
They knew before the stadium was even built about chart seating, roof details/performance and how to maintain it. NO EXCUSES.
The roof not working properly? Really? They have a ton of nerves to come up with this. Hurricanes are not new to Houston.
How many times has the roof been opened but they/Harris County wanted a roof. Remember there was grass then/hence the roof. They could not maintain that either. Do you know how many soccer/rugby stadium exists worldwide with grass? They spent more than a $1M then to go from grass to turf.
Gotta spend the money with no accountability. That is who they are.
Here is a solution:
Turn the Astrodome into a Giant Casino. Imagine the attraction that will become!
Use the taxes generated from the Casino to completely renovate NRG and then entice local developers to build a 24-7 mixed use district in the parking lots around both structures.
So, in a decade we gain a Casino, for year round use surrounded by City Centre type development (residential/hotel/restaurants/ parking garages, etc.), for year round use, and then a newly renovated NRG for the Texans/ Rodeo and major events.
Itâs a WIN-WIN for everyone!
I actually like that idea.
Too bad the dolts in our legislature wonât allow casino gambling. LOSERS!!!
Iâm really on the fence with the casino idea in Houston. Casinos outside of Vegas donât usually draw some well-to-do high rollers. They draw a few, but they really draw deadbeat dads skipping their child support payments for a hard 8 at the craps table.
Casinos bring crime, prostitution, and feed addictions in big cities. I just donât like the idea of some of that clientele around the rodeo carnival grounds for two weeks.
And I can totally see the look on wifeâs faces when the dads skip out on spending time with their family so they can slide over to the sportsbook and put a penny on Duke laying 5.5 against Louisville in the conference tourney.
You think Tilman cares about any of that?
He definitely would push for a casino.
Maybe if he could own it but if memory serves me, he bought the Golden Nugget Lake Charles while it was under construction when casino gambling failed the last time they tried to legalize it, and he has spent a lot of money over there getting Houstonians to go to Lake Charles to gamble.
