OT: Texans and Rodeo May Want New Stadium

EaDo is actually smaller. And besides, inner-loop real estate costs will drive this thing up.

If it’s not on the same lot (or on the former Astroworld site, which is apparently owned by HLSR) I’m guessing we wind up with the Sugar Land Texans. In that case, the rodeo might very well stay at NRG, which would be real weird.

Well, if the rodeo stays in that spot then the Texans can be in Eado. I think the rodeo and the texans stay together because the issue here is that the county doesn’t have the money to keep maintaining the stadium, therefore, the Texans are thinking about a new one.

I’m completely agnostic on hockey, just like most Houston-area sports fans.

Soccer is a more viable sport in this area, and the MLS has poor attendance - almost last in the league.

Again, if Fertitta or any other potential owner thought the NHL would work here, then it would be here. The economics may look good at some point, but they haven’t in the past.

There’s always been this weird obsession with hockey from a limited number of people, but it just wasn’t supported when it was here, and there’s never been anyone willing to risk their money on it because of that. Anytime I wanted to go to an Aeros game, I could easily get tickets in the first few rows for next to nothing.

Yeah, Alexander basically ran them out of town, but attendance was pathetic, and Alexander has been out of the picture for almost a decade. Granted, NHL would draw better, but Houston sports fans will not support a non-NFL team that isn’t in the championship hunt. Just like the challenges our programs face, there are too many other options and too many obstacles. The main thing that would give it a chance is that more people live in and around downtown than ever before.

Would you invest your own money in an NHL franchise?

Yeah retractable roofs for NFL stadiums are going the way of the dodo. Fixed and semi translucent is the prototypical standard now.

…what exactly do you think the price should be for a minor league team in an arena that holds 16k? The Cleveland Monsters lead the AHL in attendance right now and you can get tickets for like $15 after fees.

What about the 300 acres UT has for the new stadium site?

What difference does it make? Tickets were basically free than there were still hardly any people there on a nightly basis.

I’m a hockey fan and would love for Houston to a get a team. When the team is winning, the fans will support, the question is, are there enough fans to support a sub-500 team? That is the question I don’t know the answer to.

They’re a minor league team. That’s the case for basically all of them. It’s like saying Houston has no demand for baseball because the Space Cowboys play in a nearly-empty stadium.

It’s not like that at all. Sugar Land competes with the Astros for fans, to some extent. The Aeros were the only hockey game in town.

Whatever. If the NHL was viable here, it would be here. The results kind of speak for themselves.

Channel 2 sports news showed a response to Duarte’s article by the Texans that said they don’t want a new stadium, they want renovations to the existing stadium.

When reporters use the word “may” everything after that is speculation, usually just to stir up readers’ interest.

The Aeros were in the top quartile of IHL and AHL attendance most years.

The WHA Aeros were near the top of their league in attendance.

Obviously the minor league Aeros weren’t going to sell out a large venue regularly; NO MINOR league team can do that, even in a cold climate like Cleveland, which is currently #1 in AHL attendance and has no competition.

But bring in an NHL team….and VOILA!!!

Arenas start getting PACKED!!!

And that’s true even in many Sun Belt areas like Miami, Tampa, Las Vegas, LA, Anaheim, and Dallas.

It’s a product that draws fans even in many warm markets.

There’s NO GOOD REASON to believe that it wouldn’t be the same in Houston.

Every hockey team Houston has had has had well above average attendance in their respective leagues, so there’s little reason to believe, given that, that an NHL team wouldn’t draw well.

Houston has a lot of transplanted Yankees.

When UH played Purdue years ago in Hofheinz, there were a lot of Purdue fans in attendance.

Lots of other people have similarly moved here from northern hockey crazy states to live and work.

I suspect they would respond.

That makes sense. I would be surprised if the Texans were really to the point of pushing a new stadium, but the price tag of “renovations” could be pretty hefty, as well.

This is not directed at you TOP25

SO WHAT?
I would love a few $M’s.
I would love a brand new car.
I would love a house in every country that I like…

This is so obscene. Clearly both Harris County and the stadium operator did not do their job. In any other private properties the operator would be sued.
Does this mean NRG is not making money? If that is the case why was it built in the first place?
This stinks of public mismanagement.

Of course they’re going to say that.

FIFY, History has shown that Houstonians won’t support mediocre and below teams.

Why would we want a stadium filled with visiting fans every game?

They wouldn’t be visiting fans.

They’d be yankee transplants eager to support OUR hockey team in their new adopted home.

Those folks have been hockey deprived for a long time!

They’ll get on board.

That’s actually not what I’d expect them to say. If they were actually considering asking for a new stadium (or even if they weren’t) I’d expect them to go with something noncommittal along the lines of “as part of our due diligence going into this negotiation, we’ve considered several alternatives to our current proposed solution. That includes a potential investigation of alternative stadium options” or something of that ilk. IMO, this sends a strong signal that even to whatever extent they’ve looked into it, they’ve determined that a new stadium isn’t a likely option, and/or fan backlash over what was probably a trial balloon leak yesterday didn’t go as expected/hoped.

I think the fact that they hired their new team president, who is known for new stadium projects, has something to do with them seeing that as an option. Sure, it’s unlikely right now but they’re talking about their options when the lease is done in 2032.
