OT: Texans and Rodeo May Want New Stadium

What were attendance figures for both the Aeros and Rockets back in those days?

What kind of b.s. is this?
I will ask again.
What kind of b.s. is this?
Old video boards
Differed maintenance
Roof that was not hurricane proof
I’ll stop right here. This is 100% on Harris County and asm. Both got paid are getting paid by the Harris County tax payers.
You tell your child to clean his room. He does not do it? It gets messier. As some point he will get grounded.
I will ask again.
What kind of b.s. is this?
Dirty carpet, old signs need to be replaced eventually but this is all cosmetic work that is 100% forecasted by any stadium operators.
The article mentions degrading concrete. That usually happens with stadium close to the ocean. It should not be happening with a 20 years old stadium. The writer was told stories and repeated them.
Anyways, there is no ways that the Harris County tax payers should pay the tab. With every ticket sold for any event they should have a percentage to take care of future renovations. These people obviously efedup. You can’t take care of your room? What kind of b.s. is this?

I may have overestimated.

The 1975-1976 Houston Aeros averaged 9180 per game at the Summit.

The Rockets averaged 12,695 per game.

The Summit held over 15K, so neither team sold out often.

But the Aeros outdrew the Edmonton Oilers, which averaged 7600 per game.

The Oilers are now an NHL franchise.

That should tell you that there is more than enough hockey interest in Houston.

Indeed
the old Aeros were a top three attendance team behind only Quebec and New England.

Yeah, I just don’t see it getting big down here, unless they become Stanley Cup contenders within a short amount of time. But we’ll see.

This is the main reason why the Stars were able to build a stable fanbase. I think they started winning division championships immediately and won the whole thing within 10 years.

A major difference is that both Dallas and Ft Worth had a long history of successful minor league hockey before the Stars relocated there, and there was a strong youth and amateur hockey presence. Houston doesn’t have any of that, so it would be starting on a much weaker foundation.

The other thing is that it was MUCH cheaper to go to games when Dallas was getting started, which opened the doors for a lot of new fans. Tilman certainly sees it as a way to get people into the Toyota Center more often, but I suspect that the economics don’t look great, which is why there isn’t a team here already.

A downtown football stadium is close to impossible. By square mileage, NRG park is about 1/3 the size of Downtown Houston. There’s no way.

Not sure I agree with that either.

The IHL/AHL Aeros both won titles (Turner and Calder Cups) and were often in the top 1/3 in attendance in their respective minor leagues.

The AHL Aeros left mostly over an arena dispute with Les Alexander, who was planning to raise the Aeros’ rent by over 500%, NOT because of lack of attendance, popularity as a minor league team, or lack of on the ice success; they had even contended for a title their last season in Houston.

Chuck Watson owned the Aeros and wasn’t willing to pay Les Alexander’s rent.

It proved to be a bad move. When the Aeros moved to Des Moines, their attendance went from among the highest in the AHL to 27th out of 30 teams, PROVING that Houston is a better hockey city than people like UHCoog claim.

So given that, there’s NO sound reason to believe that the NHL wouldn’t make it here.

NONE!!!

If the NHL can make it in Miami, Tampa, Las Vegas, and Dallas, then the NHL can make it here.

Even the AHL Aeros finished 7th out of 30 teams in attendance in their last season:

So the precedent for pro hockey success in Houston is definitely there!

There are lots of sound reasons, which is why there’s not a team here. You just choose not to believe them because of your own bias.

Nah.

The reason there isn’t a team here is mostly because of Les Alexander’s past actions and policies, which aren’t good reasons.

YOU simply choose not to believe that because of your own biases in the other direction.

The fact that Tilman Fertitta believes an NHL team would do well here says it all. He would have a team here already if not for the extortion of the NHL.

Houston is massive with many transplants. NHL would do fine here.

If we are rebuilding I’d like to see a stadium like Minneapolis’s. Forget the expense of a retractable roof. Symmetrical guys, look away.

A new stadium for the Texans is absolute nonsense. In no way, shape or form should taxpayers pay one dime for this. Hannah McNair can foot the bill. Crooks.

I think if they wanted a new stadium they would start with plans for some outlandish remodel with a $4 billion dollar price tag and run a couple months of stories about how unfeasible it is. If they want an open checkbook for a remodel, they first start talking about a new stadium

The Texans rarely play with an open roof so save a few bucks and build the next stadium with a permanent roof.

Maybe they could do it in EADO.

I don’t know that he believes that (Maybe). But for him, it’s just content people in the building year round.

Les Alexander tried to bring a team here though. On more than one occasion. (Oilers;Penguins)

The state of Louisiana helped pay some of the superdome’s recent renovations and the saints kicked in 150 mil.

The Texans can’t ask the state to help bc you have the Dallas cowboys who would object so we’re on our own.

The debt for all the stadiums that Harris county is paying is already about 1 billion still owed on the 3 stadiums they built for Texans, Astros and rockets. It’s bonds that won’t be paid off till 2055 so Harris county is tapped out and can’t do more and I don’t think tax papers agree to a tax increase in these times of high inflation.

The Texans will prob have to come up with a decent amount of money like the saints or way more to make it work.

The chronicle says teams want stadiums every 30 yrs and only 5 nfl teams paid their own way I believe.
