Just ask GaTech, Tulane, and Sewanee. They were all charter members of the SEC and voluntarily left the SEC to compete in athletics elsewhere, either as major independents (GaTech and Tulane), or in small-time sports (Sewanee).
By contrast…NOBODY has ever left the B1G…except Chicago, which completely dropped sports for many years (though they later resurrected sports at a small-time level).
But those examples are decades ago and all basically left bc they couldn’t compete. In the modern era is what we’re discussing and UT can compete in the sec , especially in the nil era. They would look bad opting of the sec in the modern era.
So if your going off examples of the past then UH in a big market would be like when the big10 scooped Maryland and Rutgers for markets only. You can’t use your ex of the history of ga tech,Tulane etc without using the Maryland and Rutgers ex as being valid now , especially with regards to markets.
I think both examples of the past are either true now are aren’t but the market examples prob carry more weight vs ga tech and Tulane leaving long ago.
GaTech was still a major power when they left. They had MAJOR success in the 1950s and early 60s before departing. They mostly departed because of accusation of dirty play by Bama that wasn’t properly disciplined, and “tryout” camps being held at schools like that.
Tulane left due to competitive disparity. Obviously Sewanee, a tiny little college, was out of their league.
