OT: The Holy War and why it's different

Part 1
The Hatred Between the Teams
(I am going to try and tell this from a ute fan’s perspective. Mormons don’t mean to be exclusionary.)

Just about very rivalry through time has “hated” each other, yet those familiar with the Holy War will tell you it is different. Because these schools are 36 miles apart as the crow flies, you have brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor and occasionally people change sides, but the hate remains.

Why do the Ute fans hate BYU?
First, through the 70s and 80s the rivalry wasn’t all that close. BYU hadn’t really taken football seriously until then. Through those years, Utah “fans” may buy tickets and cheer for the Utes until BYU came to town, then they wore blue. The real Utah fans resented that their stadium would turn blue. Now Utah has more than enough fans to fill their stadium. BYU fans in that time of success were certainly arrogant.

Religion vs State and the role religion plays day to day

The biggest division is religion vs state. In general, people in Utah feel pretty strongly about the mormons. Non-mormons hate the influence the mormons have in politics, business, and every day life. It can impact laws, what’s open on Sundays, and how many bars around.

Most community parties are hosted by the mormon churches. They will do Pioneer day, Christmas, 4th of July, thanksgiving, Halloween, and additional parties where food and activities are everywhere. They are open to everyone, but admittedly, if you aren’t a member and don’t want to be proselytized to, they probably aren’t where you will end up. This leads to resentment of your neighbors because you aren’t part of the group.

Everyone has home, work, and most need a third place to socialize and find friends. In Utah, the third place for many people is church and sports. Non-members don’t go to church, and because a lot of plans are made at the third place may miss out on camping trips or other activities that neighbors go on. Mormons don’t mean to exclude, but it happens. Kids make friends at church through primary (sunday school for kids) and keep those bonds going through summer when school stops.

Kids feel left out at times, especially in the summer months. We all know that parents love their kids and hate the pain their kids feel.

This grows the dislike. It allows the Utes to be a place where an anti-mormon feeling grows.

Education
In Utah, BYU is the premier school and Utah used to be the commuter school, though they aren’t now. Often times if you go to Utah or Utah State the first question is “So you couldn’t get in to BYU, huh?” (Trust me, I didn’t get in to BYU) Again, the pompous nature of BYU fans rubs Ute fans the wrong way.

Other
Even though Utah has “dominated” for the last 20 years going to the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl 2 times, and the Fiesta Bowl and beating BYU with a lot of frequency, there are still more BYU fans in Utah. Being the sucessful program but lacking the full adoration that BYU received in it’s dominant stretch rubs more people wrong.

There are lots of mormons who are Utah fans and aren’t fueled by their hatred of the Church. They hate that BYU fans think they should police their fanbase. (I will get to this more in the BYU section.)

Why Do BYU fans hate Utah?
Religion and Religious “persecution”

Many of you know mormons. We are a friendly people. We invite people to everything. Halloween? We have a party for that. Want to play basketball in the mornings? We have a group every Saturday and Tuesday that plays for a couple hours. Come play. Heck, at football games we give free ice cream. I sit next to the visiting section and almost every game I end up becoming friends with an opposing fan that sits next to me and gift them a cougar tail.

Yet, even after us trying to be kind our faith is mocked:

Players doing mock baptisms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYMomzDpRNI

Fans mocking Communion (we call it sacrament)

(Notice they made their own tray to deliver the jello shots when they play Washington)

Mocking lds priesthood

The list goes on and on. BYU fans feel that when LDS Ute fans see other ute fans tailgating and mocking mormons in games that aren’t even against BYU they should say something.

Bullying
As I mentioned in the Ute section, kids who are ute fans often feel excluded. Then they feel justified in bullying. There are five kids in my family (my siblings and I) and we were all bullied to the point of tears regularly for being BYU fans by Ute fans. (I am sure there are stories going both ways here.) Even today, it doesn’t matter where I am, if there is a Utah fan, they will get in my face with the U sign and yell. It doesn’t even matter if they are successful in their life other wise.

In short, both sides feel slighted by the other. Both sides feel taken advantage of. Again, because of the proximity, we are all next door neighbors.

The Outbursts

As you can imagine, there have been several outbursts over the years. The most famous BYU outburst was Max Hall.

Utah Fans have made shirts that say “Max Hates me” and BYU fans have them that say "Max was Right

Then you have current head coach in waiting at Utah, Morgan Scalley.
https://x.com/Samsworth_TV/status/1852234231411560493

You also have Alex Smith saying “I’m much more into it this year,” Smith says. “I really hate them. Playing in the game helped me understand. They are the most arrogant people. It’s the whole church and state thing. They’re the ‘good kids’. We’re the ‘bad kids.’ I didn’t feel it in my gut last year like I do now.”

Along with plenty of other outbursts.

From this first part, the big take away is that Utah fans don’t like BYU fans as people, and BYU fans return in kind. Utah fans feel disrespected and excluded, and BYU fans feel Utah fans lash out like children.

Part two will be posted in this thread… as soon as I finish typing it. We are just getting started.

I’ll be honest. I will usually root for our cousins in blue, but an upset by Utah helps UH’s chances at getting into the championship (granted UH wins out)

I kinda want Utah to win to cause Big 12
chaos

Fantastic thread though. This is great.

Part 2

On the field:
In 1999 a BYU fan left the stands and tried to beat up a Ute cheerleader. It didn’t end well for him.

Since 2005 (when Ute head coach took over) BYU and Utah have played 15 times. 13 of them have been decided by one score or less and Utah has won 11 of those games.

Here, utah rushes the field 3 times in one game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1ccGdgWmqw (6 minutes)

Here is one where BYU wins on the last play (36 seconds)

BYU misses game winning field goal

Bad calls leading to lost games

BYU and Utah fans don’t even agree on when the series started. Utah claims it started in the 80s, and BYU claims we didn’t have a football team until 1920s. (We are celebrating 100 years this year.)

Overall Utah leads the series 59:32. Since 1970 there have been 50 games, and BYU leads 27-23.

LDS Church Leadership
LDS church leadership is split. The current Prophet is a Ute grad, as a are some of the apostles. While others are dyed in the blue cougars. Others were Utes but have since come to the blue. (prophets are semi-similar to a the Pope, mormons are a restoration church meaning they believe God has prophets on the earth again. Apostles would be similar to Peter, James, and John)

In Lavell Edward’s last game the Prophet came and spoke to the BYU football team and told them not to muff it.

Bonus
This doesn’t really belong in this part, but it doesn’t have a home. Here is a telegram from World War 2 encouraging the Cougs to beat the Utes. You will see BYU fans use the phrase “GIve 'em Hell Brigham” and it comes back to this telegram.

I mean, I will always cheer for BYU. Max was right.

Part 3:
Is Blood thicker than Water? Split loyalties and split coaching staffs

First thing’s first, the coaches. Kyle Whittingham, Utah’s head coach, played at BYU.

Whittingham’s father, Fred Whittingham, coached with legendary BYU head coach Lavell Edwards throughout the 70s.

BYU’s head coach, OC, and DC all played at BYU, but have coached at Utah.
*Lavell Edwards is actually a Utah State grad, fun fact.

Utah’s starting quarterback’s brother played QB at BYU, and his dad played at Utah. There are BYU legacy kids on Utah’s starting roster like the Fanos, and Snowden. and there are Ute legacy players on BYU’s roster. Current tight end for Utah, Caleb Loehner, played basketball at BYU. In BYU’s last win against Utah, Samson Nacua caught a touchdown for BYU, after playing his first few years at Utah.

History of University of Utah
Mormons have always believed that education is very important. That is why Brigham Young started Brigham Young Academy when the pioneers entered the valley. He later sold Brigham Young Academy to the state of Utah and it became the University of Utah. Selling price was $1. He then started what is today BYU.

Here is the Winsipedia line. You can see where BYU started to care about football.

Winsipedia breaks it down

Anyways… If I think of more stuff, I will come back and add to this. I am happy to answer any and all questions.

I am not known for my writing. So it probably wasn’t a “good” read, but hopefully semi interesting.

Interesting Brigham Young started both Universities, but the public one does all the mocking of BYU. Also interesting is the families that “cross over” to each side.

The final game of the season, I am going to show up at BYU with a big Houston Shirt. (I am going to the game, with a friend who is a BYU fan.) How will we be treated?

Marvelously. We are really nice to away fans. Not Utah though.

If anyone wants to meet, I’m right in the visitor area

Hi,

I have been to the stadium for marching band events, but not for football games. In looking at Google maps, where do I park?

This is a slightly dated map. Lots 9 and 10 are also free. I have a lot 5 pass but park in the small green lot below 10. I can be on the freeway in less than ten minutes from there

I remembered:

The president of Utah sends his kid to BYU.

Thank you!

It kind of sounds like UH vs UT fans. We were the commuter school and was kept out of the SWC for years. Finally, UT let us in and Jess Neeley of Rice went along with them. UT saw us as another Texas Tech kind of team that would have winning records but give the whorns no real competition. But when we entered the SWC in 1976 and won the conference championship 3 of the first 4 years, it sealed their hatred.

Coog fans hate the arrogance of UT fans and UT thinks we are beneath them. I feel toward UT like Max Hall feels toward Utah, though I do have some UT friends that are nice folks. When my daughter was a Cougar Doll and we played at UT, after the game, the UT students lined up and when the Dolls were leaving the stadium the UT students threw beer on them and called them whores. Their students got so bad that the president of UT had to put out a call for them to stop the churlish behavior, but they didn’t.

After being hit in the head by stuff thrown from the students section at the first game we attended at UT, my wife will never go back to that stadium. At that time the visitor section was below the student section and the students would throw cups of ice in the air to rain down on the visitors. They weren’t all at once but now and them throughout the game.

I never wanted to be in another conference with UT. There’s a reason why Arkansas, Colorado, Missouri, and Nebraska all left conferences when UT was in them.

BYU fans (and big 12 fans) hate Utah’s arrogance now.

Excellent read.

Part 4.

Additional info. Talking about Texas reminded me the institutional hatred and trying to smother BYU. In BYU’s hay day they had opportunities to join different conferences but wouldn’t leave Utah behind.

When Utah went to the Pac, BYU devised a plan to leave the Mountain West and to join the WAC in everything besides football. Utah caught wind and told the mountain west and they killed the WAC. BYU then joined the WCC.

During those years, Whittingham and Chris hill, the ad, tried to ignore everything BYU.

An example from 2021:
