Student leagues? Please explain.
I’m assuming it’s for the intramurals since they’re building it on the current rec field, so there’s going to be some new rec field.

This has to be fake. I can’t see this actually happening. Wishful thinking. Too much has to go right for this concept to get accomplished. Great idea tho but sorry I am not buying it.

Full RFQ here, among other places. According to the included timeline they should be well into the bid selection process. Proposals are public records, if anyone is nosy enough to put in a TPIA request.
Putting this on top of the intramural fields is setting it up for failure. It’s really inconveniently located for most of the campus — and about as far away as you could be from the dorms while still technically being on campus. Feels like a recipe for a future half-empty strip center.

The location sounds good for football game day and possible basketball game day. However, like someone else said, it is a long way from the dorms. If it was located along the rail line, it seems like it would be much more successful with the students on campus.

Putting it on top of the Green Lot (Cullen at Wheeler) would have been extremely convenient to most of the on-campus housing and also closer to the Football stadium and most classroom buildings. It also wouldn’t require crossing a major thoroughfare. Alternately, just putting it on top of what is now the Blue lot – effectively, having it straddle Elgin instead of Cullen, but mostly in the same place – would be a major improvement.
Requiring folks to choose to walk past where they are parked to get to the “Entertainment District” divorces it from the rest of the campus. Look at how the Battery parking garages are set up in Atlanta, which is the go-to example of doing an Entertainment District successfully. As The Quantum is currently planned, it’s out of the way for everyone, and half a mile in the wrong direction from a substantial proportion of attendees for Football games. Nobody except those parked in the Blue Lot is going to have convenient access to it.
This campus has an absolute ton of surface parking relative to similarly-sized campuses, which is a horrifically inefficient use of land. Cut down some of that and suddenly there is a ton of space. Take a look at a map of Cincy or UCF or Georgia Tech or UT-Austin and you’ll see almost none of that, for good reason.

Until UH officially announces this project, my enthusiasm is on pause. Eddie Nunez has had interviews this summer and to my knowledge, he has not mentioned this. If I was Eddie, I would be telling anyone who was willing to listen. Something like this would be announced by Dr. Khator. I would like to think there is a public comment period, and please correct me if there has been. A project like this had lots of variables to consider.
I am cautiously optimistic.
