Per Chronicle, we have 4 of 9 regent positions vacant. That surprises me in a
non positive sort of way.

Hope Patrick possesses his dad’s business acumen. He is a graduate of USC but his term seems relatively short, less than 2 years.

His term will expire Aug. 31, 2027.

. Retired businessman Jack B. Moore is now serving as chair, and four out of nine voting positions remain vacant after several regents resigned or left with expired terms.

How?

He didn’t even attend the University of Houston??

Is that a requirement?

I thought so…isn’t a board of regents notable alums/ former students?

No. We’ve had plenty of non-Coogs.

The only requirement is that the governor appoints you. How you manage that, …

He’s probably a place holder until Tilman completes his Italian gig

Maybe he will become a honorary Coog by osmosis after being invested ( meaning into the school working) in a way. Hopefully after realizing and understanding on the assumption his son a Houston resident, great cities require great universities, they go hand and hand.

Ding, ding. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

It’s great his son is on the board. This way Tillman can still influence him lol. The son knows where his inheritance will come from so he’ll do right for UH and his dad. Probably Abbott was influenced by donor money from Tillman also.

Regardless, it’s a win for us and should work out bc Tillman is in his ear so he will do right by us. It’s the next best thing to having Tillman still on the brd. It means he still cares.

Tilman Fertitta resigned from the board to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Italy and the Republic of San Marino under the [present] administration. He vowed to continue to provide financial support to the university.

“My resignation bears no reflection on my commitment to the university,” Fertitta wrote in his April resignation letter. “My passion for the University and its mission is unwavering.”

the kids are into the Rockets all the way - trust me on that - doubt he’ll have any major sway on UH decisions - but board appointments are indeed political

The “he’s not a Coog” argument reeks of the same stupid argument for hiring only former UH players for coach. People need to get out of their UH bubble and hire the best people with a proven track record, regardless of alumni affiliation. I, for one, welcome non-UH Board of Regents. How about encouraging a diversity of ideas and maybe a different way of doing things.

As far as Patrick Fertitta, I believe he is serving out the remainder of Tillman’s term.

I agree but I’ve seen it personally - hiring practices are very sketchy as I’ve seen experienced folks who’ve worked with way less than UH not even interviewed for fear of them maybe exposing something to folks who been there forever in a cush position

UH to award Tilman Fertitta honorary doctorate

Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta is a man of many hats, from Houston Rockets owner to the United States’ Ambassador to Italy and San Marino. The longtime entrepreneur will return to the Bayou City later this month, including a stop at his alma mater to take on a new title.

Fertitta, 68, will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Houston at a ceremony on campus scheduled for Dec. 18, according to PaperCity Magazine’s Chris Baldwin. Fertitta and his family will come to Houston from Italy later this month, then stay in the Bayou City through the holidays. Fertitta now resides thousands of miles away, across a massive ocean, from his former home in Houston. His connection to the Coogs still runs deep.

Add Emory, Tulane, NYU, and Miami to that list as well.
