The founder of Texas Tech’s NIL collective The Matador Club, Campbell was the main financial source for the Red Raiders’ top-ranked transfer portal class this winter.
I guess this means Tech will have a “sugar daddy” a la Knight at Oregon, and the SMU oil barons.
UH really needs an NIL “sugar daddy” of its own.
What would you call Tillman then?
A good sugar daddy for facilities, medical school, etc.
He hasn’t been as generous, according to most reports, with NIL though.
He indicated, as quoted in the article above, that UH needs to raise money for NIL, suggesting, if not implying, that he wouldn’t be the “sugar daddy” for that, and it’ll have to be raised from other sources.
I’m so envious of TxTech rn ngl.
But like CKS says, you can see when alumni & administration care about their program(s).
its a big deal to have a billionaire alum
its an even bigger deal when he is the founder of their damn NIL collective
The goal isn’t to foolishly throw as much NIL $$ as you can at undeserving athletes (i.e. the Texas A&M strategy), no…the goal is to build a team good enough to compete and win a championship in football, basketball, baseball, woman’s basketball, etc. by making wise “value add” decisions via facility upgrades + NIL additions + corporate opportunities.
Let’s not let the tail wag the dog, here
And a former football player and current member of the Board of Regents.
They have some really big-ticket donors, but that dude is driving the train. He’s making a bigger impact at Tech than T. Boone Pickens ever did at Ok State, and that’s saying a lot.
Texas Tech just might be in that small category of underachieving all time programs.
They have ONE shared Big 12 championship in basketball, ZERO Big 12 championships in football and ZERO NY6/Playoff appearances.
They aren’t going to be able to turn around that level of sucktitude overnight
Texas Tech makes Texas A&M look like Alabama
This is all headed to sports programs being detached from the universities, making them de facto professional entities.
Anyone focusing on today’s NIL is about five years behind the trend. By the time your feet settle the whole landscape has shifted.
you just come in here to bash tech or do you have a point that relates to the topic of the thread?
If he doesn’t accept the job offer I’d like to apply for the Tech-basher position.
Campbell hasn’t been on the scene for long. Comparing them to A&M’s long-standing futility paired with almost unlimited resources doesn’t make any sense.
Bash em if you want, but they’re so far ahead of us in the funding game that we can’t even see them.
Goes to show soliciting NIL collective funds from the average fan for $10, $50, $100 is nice, it will take about 200 years to be competitive, which is longer than most of have to live.
To be competitive, a school needs mega donors, and a lot of them, to keep the
NIL money flowing.
Yep.
The thing about Campbell’s leadership is that he’s gotten others involved and made sure that they’re funding all sports. But he’s running point on funding the football program, for sure. I think the AD there just kind of gets out of the way and facilitates things.
I hate to break it to you guys but NIL is just a transparent version of what has been going on forever. Hundreds of millions have gone over the transom. And A&M has always been waist-deep in it.
Exactly right. With this sort of $$$$ + dedication/determination - in this NIL era - you absolutely can ‘turn it around over night’.
Plus - Big 12 is wide open for a program to sweep in and take the ‘big dog’ [i.e., big money] lead with UT and OU departing.
Tech could not ask for better timing.
What?
How are the ahead of us.
We’ve ALREADY matched them in conference Championships in basketball/football and have a more impressive resume in those two sports!
More Final Fours
More NY6 Bowl wins
More Heismans
More ranked seasons
This whole thread is about money and how Campbell has put Tech at or near the top of the B12 in resources. If you can’t see how that puts them ahead of us, I don’t know what to tell you.
All those historical accomplishments aren’t paying today’s bills.
Yes and TODAY we, the University of Houston, are at the top of the Big 12 Basketball Conference standings.
TODAY!
