Part of what we’re seeing is a result of kids just not spending as much time outside as they used to, so they just don’t have as much heat tolerance as their parents. That’s just a reality that schools have to deal with.
I guess when you grow up with it, you don’t know any different. We played outside all Summer and never thought anything of it. Kids today, especially those that move here, are not used to it. High school by my office had midnight to 3:00 practice.
I don’t think it is that at all, I think in the current digital age we don’t tolerate acceptable risk as much as we used to, I am an 80s and 90s kid and can remember several times where teammates had heat strokes or were overheated, and we were just told to be more careful and drink more water. Has anybody bought a dresser lately, in 2023 they passed the STURDY act that added a ton of requirements to furniture manufacturing to save people from dying from furniture tipping over, the days of the manufacturer including a wall anchor are over, if you buy a dresser today, the dresser will be 20-22 inches deep and the drawers will only be 14" deep, it is wild and an incredible waste of space. From 2000-2022 234 people were killed by dressers tipping over.
Gatorade?
Gatorade today partners with schools and others to better their product.
Problem is the districts with multiple schools would take a major hit since it wasn’t included in the initial design - between Katy, fort bend and cy fair alone that’s nearly 30 million minimum
The one to two school districts can do it
That’s some great information, Thank you for that.
Sadly, it’s not just the heat. (2-sport athlete, at 8 a.m.)

I’m a head tennis coach in CFISD. We play on concrete, which gets even hotter. Here’s where the WGBT restrictions get real weird:
We’re not allowed to practice outside once it hits a specific number. It just about always hits that number right now. The rules only apply to practice, and not competition. On Tuesday we will start our district match at 2:30pm, regardless of WBGT. There is zero acclimation going on. Wild.
I guess I don’t see where the article indicates his death wasn’t heat related…?
Why I worded it that way: “not just the heat”. The temp at 6 a.m. that morning was 78 degrees in the Austin area. Autopsy not complete, I’m sure, but if they can’t conduct 8 a.m. practices because of 80-degree temps, then they can’t conduct practices at any time in August?
that RG has no chance…horrible stance…pet peeve from coaching
It’s 3A football against panhandle teams. If he’s big he has a chance. ![]()
I spent 20 of 35 years with AT&T working outside as a lineman. You learn early on how to stay hydrated and how often to take breaks. I would cramp real bad if I didn’t hydrate enough. I learned too much is better than not enough. We never had anyone die but a lot of people quit. I’ve been retired for 9 years, but I bet the the CWA union has the company using the WBGT monitoring now. It just makes sense if you care about human life.
Friday Night Lights ! Son lives in Idalou…3A Powerhouse…going to catch game there when go up for Tech game…hard to top small town Texas football
6 man football games are the best, imo.
Was his name Darryn Peterson?
I have a feeling this is going to lead to more issues than practicing in the heat and humidity.
Absolutely!
The summer of 1980 was extremely brutal. I remember it well because my wife was pregnant with our first. She was born in late September.
