OT - UTSA and UT Health SA merge

Should UH be concerned about this?

From Javi Cardenas (@RivalsJavi) on X - “UTSA and UT Health San Antonio are merging creating the third biggest research institution in the state behind UT Austin and Texas A&M.”

Not if we keep innovating and putting resources in our programs. We have the Texas Medical Center in our backyard and NASA nearby for partners.

Yup, this will only accelerate UTSA’s research money and by extension, its academic standing.

It’s good for the state and I’m always in favor of that. But for UH, it’s another school that we will need to watch out for

Yes, we should.

Why?

Because from what I read, this move, overnight, makes UTSA the number three research school in the state, unseating UH.

UTSA may have just moved ahead of UH in the AAU waiting line.

Absolutely not. UTSA no where near as good as us.

UT’s always had the money to spin up an extra AAU school or two if they wanted. I’m just shocked it’s UTSA and not UTD.

That’s the thing that is so stupidly parochial about that system. Well aggie
too for that matter.

Oh well, that gives a better chance to make a case for UH being funded to be an AAU caliber school.

What if UT offered us UTHSC Houston, and their support for AAU, to integrate into their system?

I’m probably the only person on this board who says this, but yes, in a heartbeat. Assuming MD Anderson is included in that, such a move would instantly vault UH into elite status. No brainer, IMO.
