OT: YouTube TV potentially losing ESPN

I agree 100%. I really like YouTubeTV. The auto recording feature was great.

Decided to ‘Pause’ YoutubeTV subscription and go with HuluTV to fill the gap.

yeah I forgot you could pause it, I just straight up canceled mine. after canceling they have a questionnaire asking WHY you canceled, the first option is “due to the contract dispute with Disney” so I guess they anticipated this.

in getting all my TV’s switched over this morning I dont have too many complaints about Hulu as of yet. video quality appears to be about the same as Youtube. The live menu is kind of laggy and it sucks that you cant customize it but it works and you can see what is what. the “recent” channels function is useful.

cautiously optimistic.

edit - worth noting I use fire sticks on all my TV’s so the Hulu app may not be the same across all platforms.

On my Apple TV I have the ESPN app. I can see any football game I want along with a lot more programing than is available on just the ESPN channels.

What am I missing here? I have all the football bowls coming up along with UH basketball. I’m not sure if there is some programing on ESPNU or ESPN2, etc that I cant get but my needs are met with the app

edit: so I am looking at the current NCAAM lineup for today that I can watch. Games on ESPN2, ESPN3 and conference stations like ACCN and SECN are all available to me. Any game on other ESPN channels are on ESPN+ along with a lot more that aren’t available on ESPN channels

2nd edit: OK, I see now that games on ESPN are not available on the app but it appears just on ESPN main channel

I have the Hulu app on my appletv, but don’t see option to sign up for Hulu live. Is it same app? I don’t see another one in app store

That’s what we have is Sling, we just get Hulu for the month if we have a game on CBSSN. That’s only thing I miss about cable, the options for game viewing.

open. up your account details and the option should be there

I live in the DC area, tried Sling, hated it (loss connection, etc). Trying YouTube TV, like it so far.

I had this problem. I had ESPN+ but had to get youtube TV to get regular ESPN channels. Now will search for something else.

But you can no longer get ESPN with YouTube TV

Just signed up for Fubo…hopefully this thing will be settled before the free trial ends.

“Since Disney owns YouTube TV’s main competitor, Hulu Plus, it’s an easy opportunity to gain a leg up. An extended dispute could mean a serious drop in subscribers for YouTube TV, especially if it doesn’t carry ESPN through the college football postseason.”

Unfortunately I think my Apple TV is too old. It says it only works on 4th gen or newer… or maybe I’m just too old to figure it out :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You can hook up the ESPN app to a TV provider. After this, any ESPN channels that you’re subscribed to will be available in the ESPN app. But you have to have a preexisting TV provider (xFinity, YoutibeTV, ATT, etc.)

I tried that this morning, but when I gave YouTubeTV as my provider, I got the message that it was not available…however, as long as you have an ESPN+ subscription, you can still get all ESPN+ programming through the app- you just can’t get the regular ESPN channels- ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or ESPN News.

YouTube tv has 3 million subscribers.

I’m interested to see if Disney finally gets shoveback.

If subscribers don’t jump ship and pay $15 less, then other streaming services will decide Disney isn’t worth the cost.

This is an interesting “dispute”
You mentioned it earlier these two companies compete against one another. Now here is the interesting part for me. Would this “dispute” make google go after sports broadcasting rights?
amazon has already done so in Europe and could very well do so in 2024 with the new college football broadcasting rights up for grabs.
You are in the streaming business. Would you want to be dictated by your rival? Costs vs rewards is an ongoing cost business analysis.

Looks like sling doesn’t have espnu (no Coogs vs osu hoops today)

Good point, particularly if live sports is the bell cow of live programming.

Talk of Amazon and Netflix and other streaming platforms entering the bidding war has been talked about since the big East broke up.

This big companies want the real money and those are found in pro sports. Once those are gobbled up then they will cherry pick what other sports to enter. I don’t see big streamers entering for a while. And by a while I mean wait until nhl, nfl, and mlb media rights are bought first.
