I’ve have always wondered why there does not seem to be a push to include the UH-D or UHCL campuses as part of the Cougar family for sports. or is there that is not widely known? When I was at UHCL several years back, I do not recall ever hearing anything to get me to go to UH football games.
Those two campuses do not have their own sports teams, even though I believe they have their own mascots (at least UHCL does). It would be a big opportunity to grow fan bases, even if it is just a smaller percentage of those students.
We could buy tickets while at UHD at a discount. Still snuck into the student section. I’d like to see an allotment for the games tbh, like 500 per campus. It would help with the transfer pipeline and overall interest.
I guess technically I would have been with the Hawks because of UHCL. Still a ways from UH main campus, but UHD, that’s another story. Both campuses are connected by the rail.
Agree with the idea of an allotment for the other campuses. If you could add 1000 from UHD, that could easily grow. I think many of the UHD are commuters, but may have families with kids. Get the parents in and have them bring their kids - long term thinking but build a bigger fan base.
I am a UHD grad and held season’s tickets for many years. UHD had a lot of adult students including single parents. I’ve been gone from there for decades, but I doubt there is much interest there. Those of us who are football fans show up. And it took a long while for me to come around.
Victoria’s got some sports of its own now. I know they have baseball–the grandson of a colleague was on the first team. I’m not sure what other sports they have. I’d guess there’s little interest there with their own teams.
But having some offers/ads for the other two campuses would make some sense. Even if you pick up a couple of hundred fans–that’s a couple of hundred you didn’t have before.
I think it’s ok that the satellite campuses exist to appeal to students who aren’t looking for the full college experience.
I think UH should appeal a lot more to the residents of the Houston area, as casual fans anyway, which by extension would include students and alumni of our satellite campuses.
Image if UT-A and UT-SA students were all loyal to the Longhorns.
Like it or not, satellite campuses are independent minded institutions.
If UH is successful in the effort to entice the students of Victoria, Clear Lake and Downtown to be loyal to the Central Campus, then good for them, but they are not required to do so.
Except UT Arlington and UT San Antonio both have their own sports teams. Agree, UH is not required to try to entice the students in, but I thought it is a great opportunity to build the fan base. Really did not know why it was not being pushed strongly.
Unless, like Victoria, the other campuses add sports programs. I could see UHCL having the space for it, but they only have had 1st and 2nd year students for a few years now and may need time to grow.
So I can only talk on my experience at UHD before transferring but:
I was an ‘older’ student in terms of ‘non-traditional’ but in a very small sense, as a 20 year old freshman. I did graduate from UH at 22 since I got credits and overtook classes.
The average age at UHD is still 25. Many of the students look to transfer to UH, seek grad school at UH, or grad school somewhere else (Rice). There is a general football interest there, or other sports, as there have been ‘UHD’ days in basketball, etc.
ticketing should at least survey the schools in mass emails if they’re up for it and shuttle them out. Shuttle only leaves after the game. Boom. You have that amount left during the final half.
UHD, UHCL and UH Victoria are not other “campuses”, they are all different institutions in the UH system. They’re separate from UH and a lot of times only get recognition from the main campus for cash grabs like this.
UTSA, UTEP, UTD are all separate universities under the UT system umbrella and have their own identities. Is this less stupid than UHD or UHV having separate identities?
Not only are those other UH campuses completely separate universities from UH, but moreover, I’m told that coursework at those schools does not always transfer to UH main campus.
