A lot of P5 guys that may have stayed if not for the coaching change.

Recruited over?

Not just the change, but a couple of those are a direct effect of Judas Vermin poaching our players after being paid to recruit them to UH.

Miller was a NJ kid that decommitted at the beginning of the season. Thought was that Mehringer finally got him to consider Rutgers…then Mehringer ended up in Austin. Kid didn’t have many more offers after that.

Moscorro was originally a top QB at Refugio, but was moved from QB to LB and it was a mutual decision to call it off as we moved on to Bryson Smith. Moscorro ended up not being highly recruited as there were some questions about academics and personal issues.

Two guys that were early 3 stars that helped raise our recruiting ranking early and helped get our former coach a new job.

New Mexico State is a rough place for football, hope he makes it work.

We did lose some good LBs, but by the same token, a couple were never strong commits, and we did very well in replacing them with Anenih and Willis-Dalton. I also really like the Pearland kid, Parish. Gooden is a great athlete and should do well wherever he finds a home, be it LB, hybrid safety, RB, etc.

Stiner, Cosmi, Young, Bernard were arguably the toughest losses because they seemed pretty solid and were very good prospects. Two of them went to Texas (one to Florida), so it’s difficult to be too upset about those defections. Aside from Ed Oliver (and maybe Bowman Sells who had an early Texas offer but was down to UH and SMU when he chose), I don’t think we’ve signed a player Texas has offered dating back to either the 80s or very early 90s. Can’t recall if they offered Chuck Clements after Steve transferred. But based on what Sellers has posted, except for a couple, most all the others were on a fence with a headwind blowing them in another direction. I think we could have kept Huhn, but apparently some friction developed between his mother and Applewhite, which I think had to do with Twitter. She didn’t hold anything back. And I don’t know just what she said or whatever, but I was really jacked to get him and disappointed we parted ways. I think Petry and Beck and Guidry when he moved to California were already gone. Bimage was always a roll of the dice, and Texas offered him. I thought Davis was solid, but Sellers claimed he was always looking around as well. We did upgrade from Odd Banana.

So I am thrilled with the DL class, and I really like the LBs. It’s as if we got a Greg Ward clone at QB. We should be set for four years at the slot with Singleton and Stevenson. We needed more OL, but if we can sign five in '18, we’ll be okay since we’re so young there now. I wasn’t impressed with our offensive skill players after Singleton and Smith. The RB from Rockdale may turn out to be better than advertised. He had some nice G5 offers, and this state produces a lot of unheralded RBs who turn out to be pretty good. Also have concerns with the DBs we signed, though I do like DJ Small of Dickinson and think he could be special in time. D’Onofrio was apparently very high on Stuard, so we’ll see.
