I watch the Holgerson interview after the Nebraska game.
He threw his WR group under the bus…but rightfully so.
He said, you guys are so BIG, how are you so bad at blocking (paraphrasing).
And I have thought that all year about our WR crew. Whenever we throw a quick screen, INEVITABLY, our WR misses the black and we take a loss on the play.
I can’t even count how many times we lost yards on a bubble screen because one or two WRs whiff the block.
Say what you want about our small WRs during the Keenum era, those guys could block and stayed in the defenders chest until the whistle blew.
Gotta get better at that.
It needs to get better on screens, agreed, but the overall blocking by WR’s has improved significantly. Go back and look at any of the long runs from this season, be it Zeon, Sneed or Sanford, you will find multiple WRs downfield helping to make it happen.
You are probably right. I just see so many bubble screens blown up by missed blocks….sometimes I don’t pay attention to the downfield stuff…
I imagine it is easier to block when you have the angle and the other guy is running full out trying to catch the ball carrier. It is probably harder to block when the receiver is at a standstill while catching the ball. You have less angle and if you get into the defender you have to hold the block longer.
