Over 4,000 told to evacuate flooding in Hawaii as officials warn 120-year-old

I was just reading about this. Incredible.

It seems like they had another dam failure warning just a week or two ago in about that same area.

Reading more about this, it seems like Dole Food Co. actually owns the dam, which was built in 1906 and rebuilt in 1921, but the state is in the process of acquiring it from them.

Before its over the government will be doling out some huge fines over the dam thing.

Sounds like they’ve already chosen to make the taxpayers pay, similar to how we do it here with abandoned oil wells.

"But after lawmakers cleared the way for the state to acquire the dam, the land board did an about-face, removing the threat of penalties for Dole’s noncompliance.

In doing so, it shifted the responsibility for fixing the dam from the company to taxpayers, who will bear the cost of repairs estimated at more than $20 million and climbing."
