The SEC and Big Ten already make a ton of money, so adding UConn wouldn’t make any sense for them
Big 12 needs all the extra revenue they can get, and that was the entire point of vetting UConn to split the basketball deal and generate even more revenue.
No other conference can split their sports up like that
To to the UH and UCLA comparison, UH had won conference championships in the SWC, CUSA and AAC and many high profile bowl wins.
If they were OK adding a UCLA that averaged 43k in the year they received their invitation than the definitely have UH on their radar due to market size, school size and access into the state of Texas
I’m not sure what the entire reasoning was for adding both UCLA and USC. I think it’s obvious that having access to the LA market needs no explanation, but why they took both I’m not entirely sure.
Perhaps they didn’t want any other conference to access that market, and so they took in both for that very reason alone.
I think the “PAC-12” is stronger than the “MWC” brand mainly because it’s in the general zeitgeist of football fans across country, but agreed, I don’t think the conference will qualify as a Power Conference unless they manage to pull something insane.
The first WAC split happened because several schools didnt like the riff-raff of the conference. (The WAC absorbed several of the Big West schools and had almost 20 teams in the conference which is another story for another time) So the presidents and ADs had a secret meetup at a Denver airport and created the Mountain West.
Once Utah, TCU and others left, they had to backfill with the WAC riff-raff.
This is now another opportunity to hopefully shed the WAC riff-raff for good.
Theres a LOT of bad blood out west between SDSU, Fresno, Boise, CSU vs San Jose State, Hawaii, Utah State, etc.
You think our lore is deep, but the other schools go just as deep and in some cases deeper than ours.
