And even Houston in the 60s and 70s.
Sometimes I post stuff that makes me feel old, but THAT is before my time.
Yes!
I think the networks may be vetting us to see if we have the potential to be a P2 brand.
By moving us to Friday âright nowâ, they want to see 1) if our fans seek out our game consistently for steady ratings and 2) attract casual fans who would probably turn to other games on a busy Saturday slate.
SoâŠdonât look at this as a Downgrade. Considering it a golden opportunity, by the networks, to highlight our brand in an effort to grow our brand nationally.
Consistent TV ratings + an expanded 60/65k stadium + AAU + 50,000+ students + competitive squad + a market the P2 canât ignore + an already established Basketball program should put us at the top of the list for that lone Texas B1G 10 spot.
We only have to prove more attractive than Texas Tech, TCU and now, SMU.
Nobody is going back to the 60sâŠ65 years ago to determine what a Power School is.
I can give you the remaining Big East schools of Temple and USF but even that is a huge stretch calling them âformer Power Brandsâ. Neither even have an on-campus Stadium!
Rice hasnât been in a Power Conference in 30 years.
Tulane longer than that.
SoâŠNO!
Rice, Temple, and USF were indeed in power conferences at one time and now are not.
Hell, UH played off campus during its time as a major independent and in the SWC (our first oower conference).
That isnât a factor.
It is what it is.
Ultimately, there has been NO net change in the number âbig timeâ college football teams during my lifetime.
At least with our first home games on Thursday and Friday respectively we will be guaranteed night games which I personally prefer for my early September match ups.
YesâŠbut not in the end of the BCS / 4 team Playoff - NY6 era which coincided with the TV Deal era
Might as well throw in the University of Chicago since your definition has no relevant time frame.
From a facilities + competitiveness + fan/brand size, Rice hasnât been a notable brand for a long time
Ok but the real problem is this game is a 7 hour drive for me, itâs super makeable and a pleasant Saturday-Sunday road trip but now Iâll have to take a kid out of school if I want a chance at it and Iâm not in the habit of doing that.
I really wish they would have asked me first.
nearly impossible even if taking the first flight out of houston friday if i remmeber correctly having done the houston to portland flight and driven down to corvallis(and eugene) while touring the NW.
iâm good with it for the tv reasons but that is a good road trip, oregon is a great travel state, mt. hood, newport beach, portland all great; stinks for traveling coogs
When I see ut, Alabama, Michigan, etc on Friday night, then I will agree !
Those jerks.
Lowkey, my favorite memories are of my dad pulling me from school for sports. It was awesome
The reason were playing so many Thursday, Friday games is because God hates ugly and the FOOTBALL program currently is the Marla Hooch of the Big 12. Woof.
I see this as a blessing in disguise.
Our Saturday games are buried within a ton of matchups but on Friday night, we get the spotlight all to ourselvesâŠor at worst, a few other P4 games.
Our core TV base + casual football fans tuning in (since there are no other options) should balloon our TV ratings which should start to grow our brand, Nationally, and provide evidence that we can be a top performer in the TV ratings.
Look at our TCU ratings last year compared to our Saturday games.
We 100% need to embrace these time slots until we are self sufficient in being a top Saturday brand that can fill a 65k stadium regularly.
This is a blessing in disguise!
Playing on Thursday or Friday is like sitting at the kids table at Thanksgiving.
wellâŠwe canât even get our 250k alums in the city to sell out a 40k stadium 6-7 times, a calendar year, so we put ourselves at the kids table.
Embrace the Friday time slot and grow our brand (both nationally and locally) and force ESPN/FOX to put another school at the kidâs table because we can self sustain our Saturday ratings.
Look at our basketball team- CKS didnât turn us into a National brand overnightâŠwe had to methodically follow the steps!
Thatâs actually true. I miss Houston games sometimes because Iâm at the BYU game or driving.
When itâs on Friday thatâs not a problem
The Friday game is in Corvallis, Oregon. Got NOTHING to do with our fans or attendance! Its a national TV game that many people can see instead of just another Saturday game among all the others.
Until proven otherwise, embrace the Hooooch baby!
