Both deserve to be in the HOF. Both earned it on career performance and statistics.
If either one was a borderline performance candidate, then I could see the reluctance, but both were outstanding players.
Maybe the HOF should have two distinct divisions or categories, one based on stats (Hall of Statistics) and the other based on contribution to the game, such as ownership, broadcasting, media, etc. (Hall of Honor).
Rose and Jackson would be inducted into the Hall of Statistics, but not the Hall of Honor.
I don’t care about drug use or gambling, especially now that gambling on sports is socially acceptable.
As far as performing enhancing drugs are concerned, I’m pretty sure that today’s nutritional supplements would have been banned during Jackson’s and Ruth’s era.
If anything players should be called out for performance dehancing drugs: alcohol, tobacco use, pot, etc.
That’s the way I see it and I’m sticking to it.
