This dude was one of my favorites. RIP Scrap Iron
Ouch. This one stings. Back in the late 70’s, the “We are Family” Pirates were my 2nd favorite team. I loved Stargell, Parker, Scrap Iron, etc. When they would come to town, I would beg my dad to take me to a game (preferable when JR was pitching). When Garner came to the Astros, i was elated. Then when he was manager, I thought I died and went to heaven.
RIP Scrap Iron. May your memory be blessing (for me…it is)
We Are Family…a great team.
Phil Garner….a great player.
Enjoy your heavenly Field of Dreams.
Phil came in where I worked one afternoon with his wife. He was a coach with the Astros at the time. After we took care of the business at hand, I said I have a baseball question for you. I asked him a question about the Swingin’ A’s of the early '70’s. Phil answered my question, and went on to tell me stories about that Oakland Dynasty for about 30 to 45 minutes. His wife finally gave up and went and sat in my office until Phil was finished talking. What a great guy he was. The world was a better place with him in it.
Rest in peace.
An OG.
What a run of baseball.
Forgot the "We are family " run of the Pirates.
Father in law mentioned.
A respected villain in a rough late 60s/70s SEC baseball.
