Pitino says the point guard is no longer

St. John’s HC Rick Pitino Says the Point Guard is ‘Totally Done’ in Today’s Basketball

Just watched one earn 1.45 million guaranteed out of the 2nd round and lead the Raptors in minutes played as a rookie

I’m glad we have Milos, and King Flem, is all I’m saying…

The short pg’s are becoming like big burly centers in the nba. Less common. In college there are still effective and a place for them.

Both of the national title favorites in Purdue and Houston have pure point guards running the show in Smith and Uzan. Not sure what Pitino is on about here.

yeah the nba and college games are completely different. The nba has evolved into fast pace, everyone has to pass, shoot, drive…a lot of ball movement. Multiple players initiate offense. It’s really positionless basketball.

College is a lot more slower and methodical. One person generally initiates the offense and it’s more positional.

Doesn’t Coach Sampson say that 3 individuals can never have a bad day on a team: the team’s best player, the PG, and the head coach. I trust Sampson.

Just rewatched UH / Purdue. In the excitement of the game, I didn’t notice how good Smith* was. Pitino is flat wrong wrt college PGs.

Pitino has points even with it being a bit over-exaggerated. Not that deep.

pitino also saying this becuase he has a roster not projected to have a pg in the main rotation… a lot of wishful thinking by him

st johns is expected to start 3 wings at guard

This . . . . .

You don’t need a point guard as much if you have an advanced half court offense with CONTINUOUS motion without the ball.
This is because the rest of the players will get open from their own motion.
All of the most efficient and highest scoring offenses have this type of offense.

If your offense is more simple, stagnant, and iso oriented (like UH’s has been), then you need a good point guard to drive, draw attention and dish out to others.

If UH could implement a motion offense, they will be unstoppable, since they already have an aggressive defense.

My surprise this summer was how effing big LJ Cryer is despite “being small”. Also LJ played the point guard really well.

Made me wonder what LJ point would’ve looked like in college

Exactly.

You mean someone to control tempo…

It is clear that what UH offense is doing now is not working. Lets change it all up . . . . .

There’s always room for improvement.
Have you noticed we frequently get into ruts on offense where no one can get open ? We have to depend on multiple elite 3 point shooters to bail us out.
