Cruz says Iowa St has only 1 starter left on team

Ted Cruz unloads on state of college football as programs get decimated by transfer portal: ‘Absolute crisis’

He has one organization to blame. The corrupt ncaa. The corrupt ncaa created this. What I would love to see is a true irs investigation into who has been leading the ncaa since its creation. I understand irs investigations have time limits. We know that uta and the ncaa conspired to get U of H on probations multiple times and this was in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s. The ncaa itself has to be replaced by a true college board representing equally all FBS DIV I conferences. Anything else is pointless.

NIL isn’t the issue. It’s the portal. If they get one transfer, that would solve a lot of it. Make your best deal and make the move. This 4 schools in 4 years is bs

I am with you but these are student athletes. Technically the “student” like every other student can change schools as many times as other students.
It follows with another question of time limits. Why should a student athlete have only four years of eligibility?

Well the NCAA isn’t some shadowy cabal, it’s the presidents of the member schools, and most of them are already state government employees.

I’d say 1 free transfer and after that you sit a year each additional transfer. That would solve it.

I think ESPN and money and greed created most of this mess

I agree that the portal screwed everything up. It’s not only that you can transfer but you can evade academic thresholds. A lot of these schools that buy players would never allow an academic applicant near the campus with those grades and aptitude. It’s borderline criminal how athletic departments can wedge their athlete into the same school that turns down a top 15% academic applicant.

If coaches can leave any time they want and go to another school, players should have the same opportunity.

Students can transfer. Players are students. The previous rules were BS. Let them go.

The previous NCAA transfer rule, where an athlete had to sit out a year before competing, was ruled in violation of federal anti-trust law. That is why the NCAA had to change it to give the athletes more freedom. This could be addressed by collective bargaining but I am not holding my breath.

NIL and the transfer portal are two potentially beneficial things:

  1. College athletes should be able to transfer schools just like any other student. Especially now that coaches can just leave whenever.
  2. Student athletes should be able to make money when their name is used in a video game, or they have a YouTube channel, etc. Scholastic sports is now a multi-billion dollar industry, and the student athlete should be able to cash in on their fame, be in commercials, make some residuals off of their likeness in a video game (same as any actor would).

unfortunately when you combine these two things they become a monster. I suspect that in 40-50 years when we look back on this era, it’ll be kinda like the Olympics in the 80’s when folks say “yeah they were breaking records but they were all juicing”. (Not saying this is true, but any of us who are Carl Lewis fans have heard this…)

Well, at least coaches have contracts.

I have no issues with the transfer portal for the student athletes.

I think it should be limited to just one free transfer if you are an undergraduate.
Once you get your degree, then you can go anywhere you want without having to sit out.

Agreed regarding the NCAA. Totally corrupt organization from the top. Today, what should be the governing body for the advancement of college sports, has only one goal : Avoid being sued.

In the end it will be the kids that lose.

How Tulsa is trying to keep up.

Aren’t they wealthy, like Rice?

Dunno much about them, other than they’re kinda like Rice, but in Oklahoma. It’ll be interesting to see how much $$$ they decide to pour into Football & how soon/big it’ll pay off.

I wouldn’t compare them to Rice. Rice has more money and better academics but is lost in a sea of entertainment options. Tulsa is the 3rd football team in the state and only one in town. So locally, in terms of media coverage, they get more attention in Tulsa than Rice gets in Houston. Like most G5 schools, anytime they’ve had any success, it’s unsustainable, as they’ve had their coaches poached. They have all kinds of financial issues. In spite of a greater than a billion dollar endowment, they operate on a budget, and have been for several years, with a substantial deficit.

It is getting contagious. Okie St joins Iowa St in major portal 43 losses.
