Punch was listed as a target by Duarte in his piece today in the Chronicle. If so, kelvin is very serious about having 8-10 “starters”
Well they’re not all gonna come. If Punch were to come, Gillespie probably wouldn’t. IMO
See his explanation is flawed lol
Teams are trying to put together teams of “star transfers,” and that’s never worked. They will point to Michigan but Michigan had one big time transfer in Yaxel, the rest were good but not seen as star additions. Kentucky and Calipari teams in general have consistently built “star studded lineups,” and never won. CKS is doing it the right way imo (not that it matters) by building a team of players who fit the system
If UH is spending $12 million for roster those teams probably are spending $20 million.
That’s crazy because $12 million at UH means going all in on roster according reports lol.
Yes, and I think that all the players that CKS is currently pursuing are “starters” on their current team. Hence the desire to have 8-10 starters on the UH roster.
Problem is you can’t start all 8-10 starters but only 5.
Shoo-- there been years coach Sampson only goes 7 deep like that Jarace Walker year.
Nevermind “starters”
I doubt that any team has ever won a Natty with only 5 starter quality players on their roster.
And during the season, when multiple injuries inevitably occur, the 6th, 7th & 8th starters really earn their keep…in addition to their playing 10-20 minutes a game throughout the season in relief of the first 5 starters.
Exactly. You can’t start all of them. The bench plays a big part of it.
To paraphrase Bill Clinton, it depends upon what the meaning of the word “starter” is.
[NOTE: As I recall, Larry Bird was not a “starter” at Indiana. And so, yes, he later transferred to Indiana State. UH could certainly use a non-starter like a Larry Bird.]
WTF?! I wonder if he was pissed about only playing 9 minutes vs Illinois? Or, a bag is being thrown his way? Jeez.
I think he meant our pond is smaller because their are a ton of players we don’t even consider because they don’t fit the UH culture.
UH has one of the biggest NIL pools out there this year……we are not missing out on someone because of $$$$….at least not this year.
My understanding is the staff prefers Gillespie….guess we’ll see.
maybe both. He is only one of few Stretch 4s in the portal so a big bag will be waiting for him somewhere
I don’t believe that’s true.
Some programs like Kentucky & Duke (& Louisville & Kansas & others) likely spend $20+ million a year on NIL. And so while I think that UH is stepping up from around $8-10 million to around $12-15 million next year, I don’t think we’ll be pursuing any of the $4-5+ million/year NIL players.
Good grief. Of course only 5 can start, that’s why I used “starters”.
Punch would make me very, very relieved about next year.
Semantics… Yes, for any one game, only 5 guys will start. But it’s a long season, and with injuries and player development, it’s not unusual for a college team to start 6 or 7 or 8 different players during the season.
And when a player that was a “starter” at his last stop transfers into the UH program and plays 10-20 minutes a game, what does that make him?
Just saw this. I just watched his film. The thing I like about that guy is he leans into the basket. There’s no 20 minutes of head fakes and jukes. He just goes forward.
