Preview: Houston at UCF to Open American Play (L 5-2)


UCF will enter conference play with an overall record of 20-6 and winners of its last two games.
The Knights earned a 10-1 midweek win over Jacksonville on Tuesday.
This upcoming series is part of an eight-game homestand for UCF.
The Knights have series wins over Siena, Manhattan, Stonybrook, Central Michigan, and Jacksonville this season, while dropping their last weekend series at home to Dartmouth.
UCF is hitting .295 as a team, led by Luke Hamblin’s .361 clip and 24 runs, while swiping a perfect 10-for-10 on the bases.
Rylan Thomas follows with a .360 average and a team-leading 32 hits, 29 RBI and six home runs.
The pitching staff owns a 2.23 ERA with 244 strikeouts to just 72 walks.
RHP Robby Howell is 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA in six starts, while fanning 36 and walking just eight in 37.1 innings as UCF’s Friday starter.
Saturday starter RHP Juan Pimentel is 5-1 with a 1.29 ERA in six starts and has fanned 23 in 35.0 innings.
Sunday starter LHP Joseph Sheridan is 1-2 with a 3.64 ERA in six starts and nine appearances and has fanned 23 hitters in 29.2 innings.


Houston and UCF have met 44 previous times, dating back to 1990.
The Cougars own the series, 26-18 and are 8-7 all-time in Orlando.
Last Meeting | Houston won the 2016 three-game series at Schroeder Park, 2-1 and all three games were decided by one run.
