Preview of Notable non-conference games

This preview adds some context for when the games are played, since we are a young team (and some of our opponents are young).

*Note: The class is from last year. Add a year to every sophomore or higher. If it’s a freshman with no stats, assume they’re an incoming freshman. If it’s a freshman with stats, assume they’re a sophomore. I would fix it, but I don’t care that much. This is how it’s set up in Torvik.

11/2/2026 La Salle (9-23 #11 in A10 at Home - Season opener)

Quick Preview: First game of the year. La Salle was a bad team that returns 2 of its 3 best players, but the rest are mid-major players who weren’t even starters last year. They are an A10 team and should be competitive-ish, but this is likely a blowout win. Top to bottom, they are more inexperienced than we are.

The one potential threat is Rob Dockery. His season-wide stats aren’t that great, but he had insane stats to finish the year, averaging 26 pts per game over the last 5 games (see below). He got to the line an insane amount of times. I think the trap and JoJo should neutralize him, but he could be a great test for the younger players.

11/8/2026 vs. California (Neutral in Lake Tahoe, NV) -Likely game 2

Quick Preview: NIT team in a full rebuild. Almost no one on the roster has any notable starting minutes. Only the center has notable experience, and he is a “he is who he is” type of player. Think Keita from BYU. The majority of them were bench players on good teams. I don’t think this team will be ready for us in game 2. Blowout win again. I think this game would have been closer in January than in game 2.

11/17/2026 vs. Rutgers (Pro Era MTE)

Quick Preview: First real test of the year. A low-end Big 10 team (but still competitive). Returns its far-and-away best player. First real test to see how much our perimeter defense has improved. They should have a solid perimeter offense. Rutgers is hoping to make a big jump from last year. The big question will be if mid-major points can translate, and they really won’t know until they play us. Their 1st 3 games are vs. bottom 50 teams in all of college basketball. If we are as good as we think we are, we should win this by 10+. We should have a big rebounding and toughness edge.

11/18/2026 vs. Florida/Notre Dame (Pro Era MTE)

image

Quick Preview: I won’t do a Notre Dame preview. We beat Rutgers, I’m manifesting it!!!

Florida preview - Honestly, they might just wash us. National title favorites. The entire core from their SEC regular-season championship team returns, most of whom were on their national title team. The one player who left, they had the option to bring him back but instead chose to bring back someone from their championship team (Xavien Lee for Aberdeen, #5th year players). Brought in touted older international guys too. They should be a well-oiled team just from the returners, and unlike Rutgers (and us), they will have played 2 tournament-level teams before playing this game to be battle-tested.

Ecstatic if we win. Realistically, I would be happy if we kept it close. We will be better in February than November, especially with how inexperienced this team is. A close loss against a well-oiled title contender in November is a great sign.

11/19/2026 vs. TBD (Pro Era MTE)

Too many teams to preview for the last game, so I won’t, but I tiered who I’d like to play.

Love to play Great game Meh Avoid Booo
Gonzaga Tennessee SDSU Any Big 12 Notre Dame
Louisville Auburn Creighton UNLV
Michigan Miami Maryland
St Johns Oregon

12/8/2026 vs. Alabama (Neutral in New York, NY)

image

Quick Preview: A ton of touted recruits who aren’t 1-and-done (25-50 range recruits). Not a ton of experience, but a lot of talent. This is game 10/11, which will be an advantage for Bama. Players will have likely broken out by now. Not all of them will work out, but multiple will. Holloway is expected to push for an All-American-type season. Nate Oats is also a good coach. This game will come down to the wire, as all our previous games have.

12/13/2026 vs. LSU (Neutral in Houston, TX)

Quick Preview: Half their roster currently isn’t eligible. Everyone with something in their notes section isn’t guaranteed to play. If everyone is eligible, they’re one of the best teams in college basketball. RJ Luis and Brice Dessert, I just don’t see how those 2 play. Niang, Levy, and Santos, it’s possible but not favorable, and the 5th years are currently 50/50. Hard to preview when we don’t know who is playing. They will have to play tryout walk-ons heavily if no one is cleared (too late to add players), likely leading to us blowing them out. If at least the 5th years are cleared, that is still a capable tournament team.

12/20/2026 vs. Florida State (Neutral in Jacksonville, FL)

image

Preview: A sleeper team for many people this year. Their depth isn’t amazing, but their starting 5 is sneakily loved by a lot of people. It’s not a consensus opinion yet, but there’s a growing group that thinks Kameron Taylor will be a lottery pick (freakishly athletic 6’7 20-pt scorer, but mid-major) - has some crazy highlights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2j_8uDYuVo. Shon Abeav was a 5-star McD AA known for scoring in bunches, and many see a potential sophomore breakout. Also, their coach took a team that was supposed to finish near last in the ACC and, even though they missed the postseason, had them finish #7 out of 18 in his 1st-ever year head coaching (from the NBA).

But from a preseason perspective, it’s hard to fear a team in which their entire depth is 3-star freshmen, and their projected 2nd and 3rd best players are from teams we whooped last year (Cincy and Colorado). But this game is basically mid-season. They’ll have already flopped or broken out by the time this game is played. Preseason, I say comfortable win. It might be a different preview in December.

Wow. The Florida guys are finally seniors. They are going to punish teams this year.

I have a feeling that game against Florida will be Mercy’s coming out party.

25 days between non conference home games in November? We play LaSalle on 11/2 at FC and don’t come back to Houston until 11/27 against Oakland? For real?

will be the 1st real game to test our toughness and rebounding too …
if the 5th years are cleared, meaning aberdeen is eligible, they will outsize and out athletic us in every position
they out experience us and one of the few team that has won more than us with thier current players

this is a game where it would be “okay” for us to lose and lay down…but will they? this is a game we will find out if we have some dogs on our team… if we are tougher than last year …who wants to fight for it
there are a few games we havent been favored… but this is the 1st game in a long time we would be seen as true underdogs in years
(*assuming we beat rutgers)

I disagree wholeheartedly. This is a serious question, why do you tend to downplay our team so much. I understand you’re taking a non bias position, but there’s no chance I believe they “out athletic” us at every position.
Just off the top of my head Mercy is more athletic than Fland and Jojo is more athletic than Condon. Mercy is also much bigger than Fland. Dedan is also a better basketball player than Aberdeen. I just don’t think the hyperbole is necessary to get your point across. On paper, they’re a better team. All that other stuff is extra

any honest critic of our team (That 99% is surrounded by praise) is considered downplaying now …smh

In a noncon preview that i have us 12-1 all but 2 (maybe 3 depending on lsu eligiblity) as blowouts … you say im downplaying houston…

will preseason rank houston top 3 preseason…“why are you downplaying”–
you had some objectivity when you first joined te board and its slowly just becoming cougars glasses

but just cause we like basketball conversations

fland is their PG… mercy isnt our PG why would they be matched… why would we be comping aberdeen to dedan???

  • pg: boogie fland is bigger and more athletic than dedan, boogie dunked on like 7 people last season. also dedan was healthy for the Florida game they did defend each other… a very notable physicality difference
    boogie dunk

  • sg: 6’6 denzel aberdeen is bigger and more athletic than mercy, who loves to play bully ball

  • W: 6’9 Thomas Haugh is bigger and more athletic than mccarty
  • F: 6’11 alex condon is bigger than delrocco …athleticism is a question mark as neither are particularly that athletic

  • C: 6’10 Reubun Chinyelu is bigger than Jojo…even including wingspan… chinyelu is 7’7 wingspan, jojo is 7’6 … athletecism? who knows both are freak athletes… jojo is more agile, chinyelu stronger

now that ive laid out my point, what do you wholeheartedly disagree with?

I just don’t think the hyperbole is necessary to get your point across

  • you love to nit pick… this was an essential part of my point… up until this game we will outsize and out athletic all our opponents…we should win the rebounding battles… our ability to fight for rebounds in this specific game not having that advantage… that will be a great game to gauge heart and hustle…

you just love to nitpick anything

Why’d you get so hurt lmao I asked a simple question. This is what you do, and then you have minions come defend you. You also add inches to height and then move the goalpost. I specifically mentioned athleticism and now you’re talking about height. And you’re admitting they aren’t more athletic. You simply could’ve said “they’re bigger,” and left it at that. You also seem to believe athleticism means “jumps high.” And it’s funny you mention Fland being compared to Mercy, but here you are switching Condon and Chinyelu to switch your narrative.

To answer your question, the only for sure is Chinyelu is more athletic than Delrecco and Fland can jump higher than Dedan. I’d challenge you on Mercy and Aberdeen, McCarty and Haugh. And JOJO is much more athletic than Condon. So yea, “they out athletic us at every position,” is not true.

A simple question man and you bring up ooc record etc. Boy I tell ya.

THE EXACT THING YOU QUOTED

what do you think outsize means??

(sidenote: ive debated like 10 times that jojo not delrocco will be the center on defense, ive been consistent with that, why would i randonly switch for this convo)

if you want to switch chinyelu for condone … i have a ton of thougths about that, but thats a different convo…(quick summary: florida is a driving team, subpar shooting team, so we’ll let condone pull jojo to the 3pt and let them drive on delrocco?) ok fine … lets say that is how we role… sure ill give you jojo over condone

  • when did is say it was just jump higher with dedan… dedan offical scouting report says “He’s undersized, not a naturally explosive athlete” {direct quote}, and boogie talk about his athlecism, quote his elite quick burst for offense and defense (nothing to do with jumping)… this is why i cant have real conversation with you… you KNOW boogie is more athletic dedan, instead of just saying “ill give you pg” you went on a tangent about jumping higher isn’t athleticism … imagine trying to have genuine conversation with this person

  • haugh is vastly and i mean vastly more atheltic than mccarty… mccarty barely leaves the ground when he jumps… ps this isnt something im just saying now, last year i noted mccarty could be a world class defender becuase of his crazy wingspan…despite his lack of athleticsm… also noted how harwell was the opposite, not the craziest wingspan but super athlete…
Haugh is more athletic… it honestly isnt even really a debate (watch the 2min clip below)

oh forget about mercy vs aberdeen… here is aberdeen dunking over floridas head coach in the preseason dunk contest

Lmfao dunking over a 5’10 guy or Mercy dunking on an Iowa St. player in game? Please get ahold of yourself man. We gotta stop this nonsense. And athleticism is not exclusively jumping, as I’ve stated.

I guess Florida has to get some hype for next year because of the returning players, but watching them lose 2 of their last 3…they still have a lot to work on. They are still not at the level they were when they had 4 NBA guards and beat us.

Recco isnt freakish, but i think he has more athleticism than he’s getting credit for. He’s definitely more athletic than Jwan. Having him at center is going to create matchup problems with him on offense. P4 Players are bigger and taller, but they will also be slower. Recco is going to go past some of these guys. And having a PG like DJ…he is going to be an issue if you just have tall guys that cant move.

And Recco can finish and also get to the line

So we are clear dunking “over” someone is more athletic than dunking on them.
I could clip together a bunch of clips of Aberdeen dunking on people … but it won’t make a difference… I’ve accepted being difficult was the main objective you had

florida has some flaws … mainly the shooting, there isnt a notable shooter in the starting line up… only one on the entire roster…(tlaking top line shooter)… but a counter to that isnt that they werent a great shooting team last year and still won the SEC

but great post defense and controlling the boards is the path to beating them

recco isnt athletic to me he is just weighty…but i agree with a ton fo te points you made… their are question marks on his game translates to a higher level… but if it does , he will thrive in our system, with a pg like dedan and a coach who loves to feed the post

McCarty barely jumps on his shot, but he can jump out of the gym when needed. I was shocked at some of his blocks last year, way above the rim. Not sure how that relates to overall athletism, but his leaping ability is outstanding. Much better than I thought coming in a couple yrs back.

keep in mind chase has an abnormally long wingspan thats 7ft+ and is 6’6 … imo i think you are crediting “his leaping ability” for things that might be more about his wingspan (looking at the top = the block, not the bottom = how far off the ground he was) … i watched a few of his img senior seasons games and noticed smaller guards were getting up their with him on jump balls… and noticed he doesnt have that much bounced

a reverse statement would be with his natural body, 6’6 with a crazy wingspan, if he was notably leaper it would pop out more on tape … he already has a size and reach body advantage

SEC had a down year last season. You saw what we did to AnM. They had some teams get in the sweet 16…Vandy and Texas played better than expected…but no one anyone took seriously. Even our team won a few SEC games with 3 freshmen.

Would love to play this Florida team with what we have coming next year. And please Illinois again…

Another 10 post and probably 30 more I will never read.
