Question for all the football gurus on here…why don’t more teams run the triple option? Why can’t we run it at UH? I’m not an Xs and Os guy but it would seem to me that with King and and depth at RB we would or could have a pretty decent run game.
I’ve been a huge fan of the fast paced high scoring offenses we have had but wouldn’t mind seeing something completely different come in. Seems like we would actually benefit from slowing the game down and controlling the pace being as that it’s hard for G5 schools like us to have the depth on the defensive side of the ball.
If you run the triple option you can say goodbye to any good WRs or passing QBs. It’s good in spurts which is why teams have integrated the run/pass option into the offense. Kids who want to be pro ready will also have zero interest in playing offense here.
Calvin Johnson is the one exception of a great WR that played in an option offense.
Calvin Johnson did not play in Paul Johnson’s Triple Option offense. Paul Johnson got to GT for the 2008 season. Calvin Johnson got drafted in 2007 and last played at GT in the 2006 season.
But you are correct most kids will turn away from a triple option team because the scheme is not very relatable to NFL offenses. QB’s and WR’s want to pass and catch. That wont happen in a Triple Option offense.
Also, despite the perception of difficulty of defending the triple option, it’s not that difficult to defend. The reason it’s so difficult to defend is because very few teams run triple option offenses. If more teams around the country begin running it, it will slowly begin to lose its advantage. Similar to the way Navy and Air Force don’t dominate their leagues, teams are use to seeing the triple option and know how to prepare for it.
Nope. Triple option is very boring. And one thing Coogfans have made clear that if the offense isn’t electrifying, it’s not good enough… even if we win.
No. It’s high risk and difficult to run. When it works it works, but when it does not, yuck. It works for the service academies because so few run it anymore and it gives them a competitive advantage. The era of the running quarterback is over.
