Question for Californians here

Gang,

I have heard that Yum! Brands (of KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut fame) also owns a chain of burger joints called “The Habit Burger,” mostly in California.

I’ve never tried that chain. How are the burgers?

Are they more comparable to MackyD’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Checkers/Rally’s, or are they more comparable to Whataburger and In-and-Out…or are they something else altogether?

@FormerShasta , @92010Coogs , @Cougardue , and @HWSCoog , please let me know!

Looked up their website. They are heavily western USA and are also in Fla and Northeast. In Spokane they want $16 for a cheeseburger.

Ouch!

They’d better be damn good for that price.

We used to eat there quite a bit when we lived in CA.

It’s on the higher end. More like 5 guys than McDonald’s. We liked it a lot.

OK, I’m not a huge five guys fan.

How would the burgers there compare to, let’s say, Beck’s Prime or Trill?

I’m not saying it tastes like that. Just more going after that market. It’s higher end quick burgers. They are flame broiled which is different than a lot of places.

They have sides like fried green beans along with typical fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings.

They do their own thing so hard to compare.

Doesn’t matter…

Once you say you don’t really like 5 Guys your burger credibility goes out the window.

Come on now Bro.

Five Guys ain’t no Beck’s Prime. It ain’t even Fuddrucker’s. Not even sure I like 'em more than Whataburger.

There’s one pretty close to my house in Katy, but I rarely eat there. Not a huge fan.

5 Guys > Fuddruckers for sure… maybe not Beck’s Prime but only one of those I’ve ever seen is in the Galleria area in the H…

We have one in Katy.

And there’s another on Dairy Ashford in West Houston.

And no.

Fuddrucker’s over Five Guys.

Becks Prime for the win

I really liked Habit burgers, recommend it

I recently moved back to HTown and am enjoying Houston food.

Ah, I thought you were still out there. My bad.

I wonder if that chain will ever reach Texas. In and Out did!

So tell me, how would YOU compare it to Beck’s Prime and Five Guys? I first tried Five Guys in Virginia, and have also had it here in TX, but it’s not one of my favorites. Beck’s Prime is almost in a class by itself here in Houston, but it’s much more gourmet-ish fast food than normal.

How would Habit compare with Five Guys or Fuddruckers?

I’m just assuming it’s better than MackyD’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Checkers/Rally’s, simply because just about everyone is, right?

Yes better than those fast food places. Different than Five Guys. More natural less greasy. My girlfriend won’t do Becks because of prices so I haven’t been in forever. I will say if Gabit was in Houston I would go but have found better but no chain choices. Houston places make me uninterested in Chain restaurants

Sorry I missed this thread earlier. I have opinions!

The Habit is in the same class as In N Out. Prices wise, they’re really not that expensive. The prices are usually for a meal with fries and drink, but ala carte I find it to be good value. It won best fast food burger several years in a row, 3 to be exact.

It’s a damn good burger. My son’s favorite, so we eat there way more than In N Out, and using the app, no lines. No drive thrus at most locations. We accidentally ate at the original in Santa Barbara during Covid, as they had a walk up window and we had gone to the one zoo that was open.

The Double Char is big and good, but a lot of burger, so I get the single. Ironically, I usually order mine “whatburger style”, with Lettuce, Mustard, Pickles, and Cheese. To be fair, I do the same at In N Out, and I still prefer both to the current version of Whataburger.

I see Culver’s made the list, which I think is in a similar class. I’ve had them a couple of times in Houston. I’ll have to try them again, because my buddy told me he preferred them to Beck’s, so I tried to compare. Hell to the no, and the price difference is a tip off. But Beck’s is its own thing, and my favorite burger on Earth.

The Habit also has some pretty Calfornia type things like a sourdough double with avocado and fried wasabi peas (wife’s favorite).

I’d say they earned their flowers on this, and since I don’t have Beck’s out here, am happy with those two choices most of the time. I like a good pub burger though.

There’s a Culver’s in Fulshear. Good burgers. Decent fish sandwich with an actual fish fillet, although even with the sauce, the flavor is bit bland. The Checker’s/Rally’s “deep sea double” is still my go to “fast food” fish sandwich.

I gotta try Habit. Not sure when I’ll get the chance though. In my second career I travel very little, and I’m not sure when the next time I’ll get to visit either coast might be, especially given my current home/caregiver obligations that largely prevent me from going anywhere.

Sure wish Habit would open some locations here in the Houston area.

The Habit is really good but I prefer my own home made burger. I never really like In-N-Out. When I get fast food I get Rubio’s. I love seafood.

The other that I really like is El Pollo Loco.
It is better than any other Mexican fast food restaurant.
Some like Chipotle I like Cava better.
Interesting fact:
Most of the fast food businesses are from California.
Becks Prime is my all time favorite.

Ya know, I’m old enough to remember when there were Del Taco franchises in Houston.

They still have them in CA.

I was sad to see them go.

To me, Del Taco is better than Taco Bell. Haven’t tried to chain you mentioned though.

Del Taco also serves Coke products. Like Taco Bell, but hate friggin’ Pepsi.

I like Del Taco but it is not even close on the same level with El Pollo Loco.
