Ramblems

THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF COMMENTS ABOUT WHICH P5 CONFERENCE
WE WOULD BE IN. THIS IS JUST AN OLD COOGS COMMENTS BUT THE
BEST GUESS.SEC,NO,BIG NO, ACC NO PAC 12 NO. OK AND OKS TRIED TO
JOIN AND WAS TURNED DOWN. BOTH WELL RESPECTED SCHOOLS. WHY
WOULD P 12 TAKE UH??? UT MIGHT HAVE BURNED ITS BRIDGE TO P12
WHEN BACKING OUT FEW YEARS AGO. ONLY WAS WE GET IN IS IF UT
TAKES US WITH THEM. THEY HAVE NOT HELPED US IN THE PAST WHY
NOW ??? BEST CASE CHANCE. OK & UT WITHDRAW. MAYBE KANSAS
ALSO TO BIG. NEW BIG 12 NEEDS SOME NEW TEAMS. SIX NEW SCHOOLS
EAST AND WEST. ONE LESS TEXAS SCHOOL SO THAT MIGHT HELP. OTHER
THAN THIS SET UP I CAN’T SEE UH ANY PLACE ELSE. THERE IS ALWAYS OF
A CHANCE TO ANOTHER BUT SLIM. THINK HE LEFT TOWN. GO COOGS

I’m afraid i didn’t follow that at all. You said no to the p5’s but then mention something about the pac.

I think it was why would the PAC12 or P12 take UH. He thinks best case: OK and UT back out of Big XII and the only logical fit for UH would be a revamped Big XII.

Imagine how much money the remaining old big 12 schools would make for a short time due to the exit payout.

Agree with this. I think there is an outside chance at the PAC but seems unlikely. A watered down Big 12 is most likely. We just have to hope it’s good enough to stay invited to the party.

This might have been brought up but I would like to know the following:
What are the details in the espn small 12 contract/any official copies out there?
What would happen to this same contract if uta and ok leave?
What will happen to the small 12 status in case uta and ok leave?

The contract requires at least 10 teams for football. That is why TCU and WVU were added. They needed 2 teams that could play immediatly and they were the only two teams that could.

pac 12 is slipping in terms of tv revenue and success in major sports. some of the lesser teams are having financial pressure related to athletics. think cal where Pezman just came from. adding UH gives them another market and a chance to increase revenue…the problem, I think is who else?
BYU often mentioned has issues playing on sundays…san diego state makes sense but adds another california team and there will be bias against that in pac 12 country just like uh in texas.
so do you try and poach someone like kansas from the big 12 or maybe nebraska from the BIg, rumors have them as unhappy
i think this is the issue keeping UH out of pac 12 for now…who else do you bring in ?

Moncoog - there should be no exit fees (or very minimal exit fees) from either UT or OU if they decide to leave the Big12 when the current TV contract expires in a few more years.

The two most logical at the moment are New Mexico and Houston. I believe New Mexico went indy to try and build their football reputation.

If UT and OU leave early, Big12 is entitled to all money from any media contract they are apart of until the contract runs out in 2025. That’s the Grant if Rights losing them together. Of course, that could be fought in court and UT/OU would probably win, but no other conference really wants to see that tested as they all have their own GOR.

The bigger issue would be if 3 teams left, let’s say Kansas goes along too; the Big 12 would no longer have enough teams to form a conference. The idea being that if 3 left at the same time would void the GOR even if the Big12 backfilled to get back to 8. Again, their would be a court case, the 3 teams would probably win…yet, again, no conference really wants to test that.

There have been rumors that UT and OU would make a deal with the Big12 to leave 2-3 years early. In return, the offer would be that the Big12 would retain P5 status until the current playoff contract ran out in 2026 and possibly longer depending on the ease of negotiations.

Of course, all the Other Autonomy 5 have to do to vote the Big12 out is to band together to vote them out. They would win 8-7 even if every non-autonomous conference voted against it. I imagine there would be court cases and such, which could get messy for everyone involved. Who knows what would happen at that point.

In reality, nothing probably happens until 2025.

There would still be an exit fee just as ucf and uconn are still receiving money from all the teams that bailed on the big east

That would be a marked decrease in quality and the pac would be pretty dumb to take in New Mexico. No market and no underdog status because they can’t even beat the underdogs.

What’s the basis of this prevalent notion that UT or OU will leave the BIG12. Its wishful thinking IMO.
That conference raked in 650 million, 41 million per school last season with UT Football in the gutter.
That’s some serious dough folks. No UT is not killing their cash cow and will not let us join either

I think the Old Gray Fox is spot on !

Talks of ut and ou leaving are just wishful thinking.

I don’t see either leaving and the big 12 has no reason to add teams. They make money and still make it into the playoffs.

We have no chance getting an invite to the Big12 as long as UT is there and they’re not leaving. No other conference will have a school that wants to run things and take a disproportionate share of the money like the Big12 does and will do with UT. We have no control over what the P5’s do and basically need to develop an attitude that they don’t even exist and concentrate on UH and thenAAC.

Agree, I’m sure there is an exit fee in the Big 12 contract. There just likely wouldn’t be any GOR issues if they left at the end of their TV contract.

When ATM and Missouri left the Big 12, their exit fees were negotiated at ~$12 Million each. And as the Big 12 TV contract expiration approaches, any such exit fees would typically result only from the withholding of future conference revenue distributions that would have otherwise been paid to the departing schools.

I kind of doubt that would be that big of a deal to either UT or OU as their season ticket sales and contributions dwarf their conference distributions, and they would most likely be getting even bigger distributions in their new conference arrangements.
