Remember When

Yezman’s day: “Is the water dispenser up and running? Let me try it. Ahhhh tastes like water. Success! Can you text Dr. K and let her know we did it? I am going to go drink… yeah in Dana’s office. Of course.”

H-Town, you summed it up superbly, I’m in :100: agreement, and I’m amazed that so many others didn’t see this coming when Holgy was hired.

This is true

Also true the def coach wanted the UH job but we passed.

Just give me 5 more years to build the depth to match and compete with AAC Rice that was promoted FROM CUSA!

I don’t know who else was available, but it was a solid hire at the time. Bringing Applewhite back wouldn’t have been anything other than having a lame duck season before getting somebody else (kind of like 2024 might be). Especially a quality hire if you thought Dana would be re-invigorated with a fresh start and being in Houston. We have an easier route with recruiting than WVU does and a higher ceiling. I wasn’t worried about him “only” averaging 7.5 wins a year at WVU because they are in the middle of no where and in the wrong conference with their recruiting area (recruits in PA/OH want to play Big 10, VA want ACC/SEC).

The problem is, instead of being fired up coming to UH, he got more comfortable. He doesn’t seem to have any pressure on him to not just hire a friend over a better coach or recruit a better player than one he knows or one that just falls into his lap, like the Houston guys that left the city but it didn’t work out at their first stop.

But I will agree that 3 of the last 4 hires have been done with no real work which can’t happen. The one hire that worked the best was when a real, open search happened.

Kiffin was the choice to keep the momentum going but Tilman scared him away.

I’ll never forget when he gave an interview on a sports radio show saying UH will NEVER be a stepping stone again…I remember thinking…how stubborn are you?

Then out of nowhere…we hired Applesauce.

Read Tilman’s arrogance, it was all about a coach he could control (contract wise):

THAT was to moment our program jumped the rails and we’ve been trying to get back to H-Town Takeover territory ever since.

I think it should be apparent by now. No buddy hires. No internal hires. Hire a search firm to get us the best young offensive minded candidate. There will be relatively more stability now that we are in the Big 12. Don’t worry if they will stay.

TBH, i didn’t want Lane Kiffin as head coach. He wouldn’t have been much better here.

really…he did well at FAU and leveraged that to a SEC HC job

Yes…he would have been a two and done but we need to understand who we are and use that to OUR ADVANTAGE.

He desperately wanted to prove he was a P5 coach and we would have benffited.

Then… take the buyout $$ and find another hungry coach and benefit!

The inverse is a CDH type situation which we have to PAY to get rid of because he is killing our program and can’t coach.

You negotiate a contract based on the cards you hold. Nobody was offering the PAC12 anythingo pu because the value was not there. And there was no bidding war to push up the value of their contract. So they decided to try and get more and could not. Nobody was going to pay them more than their value.

Yet, when Holgerson won 12 everyone knew it was a paper tiger and not his great coaching that got us there.
NOBODY was offering him a contract even at less value. If anything the market said to give him a pay REDUCTION. Instead we pay him more with a buyout…which was totally unnecessary based on the interest from other teams during his miracle season.

A Lane Kiffin hire would have similarities to hiring Coach Prime. You know going in he will only be your coach for a short time. In fact, Kiffin has a documented history of team hopping.

The difference between Kiffin and CP is Kiffin has the “I’m the smartest coach in the room”, behaves that way, and burns bridges in teams he leaves.

We are the old Baylor. Basement dwellers of the Big 12.

That’s how it appears so far.

Yep. We are the old Baylor. Will be until we make some changes.
