If Lyft and Uber provided dashcams or at least made them mandatory, maybe it would mitigate this. This also happened recently in Detroit.
I don’t get it. Drivers are paid through the app and don’t need to carry money.
What’s going on here?

Very sad. A guy trying to make some money by providing a service to people.
I suppose the thief and murderer look at it as as easy way to have a car they want,
come to them, at a location and time of their choosing. And the poor driver may
have some rings, watches, cash, credit cards, or debit cards on him as well.
Required cameras may help; something like the body cams please wear. I would think the service would have record of the cell phone used to request a pickup.
Maybe some AI could be used to determine if phone used for the call is not stolen,
a burner, or something else is off about it ? Or at very least warn the driver of recent hijackings in that area.
Could the service require the caller
to provide bio data , like a face scan or thumb print, if it’s an after hours call ?
Don’t see why not but someone would likely complain.
Seems like ride share companies defer to the rider since they’re paying but it’s the driver who actually provides the product.
Also, the idea that drivers are considered “independent contractors” is ludicrous since drivers do not set the price and can run afoul of the law if they give rides off app.
On a side note:
In 2023, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s total compensation was $24.2 million, while Lyft’s CEO, David Risher, received a total compensation of $78.2 million, including bonuses and equity. ![]()
That is awful. They don’t carry cash. I generally chat up my driver and they barely make $15 bucks an hour. Ride share drivers are not getting rich and are at great risk, especially at night. There should be a dash cam or some camera to record the ride, but how do you ensure some privacy for both?
It’s public transportation so no need for privacy.
There has to be some. If not what would stop someone from posting “girls/guys from Uber” in a way that monetizes it?
Don’t know what you mean.
Recording a ride for security purposes is one thing. Monetizing a video of someone without their consent is something else.
I am for safety and recording a ride but how do you ensure after a safe ride it is deleted or how do you prevent downloading or use by others. Some states also have laws about recording people without consent or knowledge.
Are trains, bus and plane rides recorded?
They probably could, theoretically, but I don’t think anyone (riders, Uber, drivers) particularly wants that. Uber works because it’s easy for everyone involved; change that even a little and their ridership would drop heavily. With respect to late night in particular, that means more people probably choose to take a risk driving drunk than taking a rideshare.
Dashcams are probably a better solution.
I’m just guessing here but I think anything recorded in a public setting is ok, like concerts, sporting events or the beach, etc.
Monetizing or using it as blackmail or some other nefarious use might be more problematic though I’m not sure.
Also, I think Uber has a way for a driver to automatically record a ride using their phone camera without the need of a dash cam. Lyft should do the same. Plus, it wouldn’t/shouldn’t be too difficult to code an alert to the rider using the app that the ride is being recorded. That would also help tremendously.
I forget, are Uber/Lyft drivers allowed to carry a gun?
I wouldn’t drive late night without one.
No guns are allowed but mace is. I’m not sure about tasers but probably not.
In Texas you can carry in your car without a license, I believe.
Did they catch the p.o.s.'s?
Did you catch when the reporter mentioned that this was the third carjacking in the same neighborhood?
Maybe but it’s against the terms of service.
Johnny, a guy could come up with a cheap cure for cancer and someone would complain. There are people who just like to complain.
Are these guys allowed to carry a firearm while they work, assuming they could legally otherwise? That might be a discussion worth having, but I also seem to remember stories about drivers trying to kidnap riders or something so I don’t know
Oh someone already asked, nvm
Well yeah, especially if it came in the form of a vaccination ![]()
I was thinking about getting some for my car jusy for driving around not working as a ride share or anything.
