Robert Mayes

We lost one of our greatest Coogs and one of the finest people I’ve ever met. Rest easy, Mr. Mayes. I wish you could have gotten one more game against Texas Tech.

I remember when I went to UH, I’d always sit on the West end zone so I could watch the band march up from the east tunnel before games. Always gave me goosebumps.

Mr. Mayes was always so kind when we would visit at TMEA or TBA. RIP Mr. Mayes.

He was, indeed. He was part of the hardy crew that persevered through some really bad Cougar athletics years, and he also had the chance to be part of some of the best years. The band, like many programs during his tenure, was typically underfunded, but like any good Coog, he seemed to embrace that challenge, even when his facilities were literally falling down around the band (and flooding).

Rest easy, Coach.
