5 or 6 robotaxi crashes since January in Austin. They seem minor,
no injuries, and one caused by the teleoperator driving it into a fence.
Still, I expect better and hate the vendors fighting to keep incidents secret.
The news comes as Tesla had reported 5 additional crashes of its Robotaxis in Austin in January, taking the total number of incidents with its service to over 14 since mid-2025 when the service first rolled out.
What is robo about a remote operator?
Wow, after software recall reported rolled out previously, a waymo drives
into a flooded street again. This time in Atlanta.
Obviously something not right with these patches, testing, and rollouts. Sounding
very much like the failing to stop for school buses incident. Recall, patch, rollout,
and incident happens again. Another “edge case” on a polyhedron with infinite number of edges.
Tesla cybercab
Interesting for a cab as that’s what it was designed to be, but how much room is needed to open the doors. Could see it as a daily commuter.

Sounds very bare bones for $30,000. I can’t see people buying
one to be their daily commute vehicle.

I saw this on Google news feed I get on my Pixel. The Electric Viking had a 15 minutes video that was a comparative of cybercab to Waymo ect., but don’t know how to post just the video. I try to stay analog as much as possible.
Would they be selling them to consumers or only for robo taxi type services?
That’s a question too. I don’t know how you could restrict usage for those that want
their own personal cab in the driveway. I guess the $30k covers the AV FSD subscription for so many years. Unless there is an add on cost for that.
I saw a headline that Waymo was suspending service in Houston and some other areas at least temporarily with the flash flood warnings. Makes sense, you don’t want your vehicles operating in conditions they can’t handle but this is Houston and flash flood conditions happen pretty regularly.
Probably a wise decision to park the fleet when flooding is in the forecast.
But it tells us they don’t have a quick fix for their cars operating in rainy weather
with flood conditions likely.
Which is kinda surprising to me, since they have been doing AV on public streets since 2018. 8 years into it, and sidelined by a very frequent weather condition. I applaud the cautious approach; but floored they still have this problem. It doesn’t
give you a lot of confidence in product.
Claims Tesla FSD and robotaxi aren’t as safe as Elon says.
The former employees reported regularly seeing FSD fail at basic tasks, including pulling over for emergency vehicles and giving motorcyclists enough space. Sometimes, they saw FSD-piloted vehicles fail to brake on freeway off-ramps, including a case where a Tesla hit a concrete wall. (The footage, they said, didn’t show whether anyone was hurt.) Two employees said clips showed FSD failing to avoid construction zones. In one such incident, a Tesla drove into the zone, nearly striking workers, one of the people said.
As Tesla data labelers prepared for the rollout, the software was still erratic, two of the employees said. With each FSD update, some driving behaviors improved. Others worsened. In the Utah office, two large screens displayed statistics on miles between driver interventions for FSD – a key autonomous-driving safety metric.
“It would go up and down like the stock market” with no consistent improvement, one of the former employees said.
Uber is now launching robotaxi’s in Houston.

Michael Butler was traveling in his Tesla Model 3 around 8 p.m. local time in Katy, Texas, and was operating the vehicle “with an automated driving assistance system,” the Harris County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Follow-up, NTSB is now investigating the crash. Really no details as to who
is at fault here; driver, autopilot, or both.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed Monday it is launching an investigation into the crash.
