Schlitz beer production ends after 175 years

Schlitz is the beer that lot of us cut our teeth on. It was the original beer sold at the Astrodome when it first opened and the Astros beer sponsor on TV and radio when I was a youngster. I remember my dad complaining when he would take us kids to the Astros games that he could not get a cold Falstaff Beer and had to settle for a Schlitz.

There was an era in the 90s when I think they were using the traditional formula, and my buddy had some at a party. It was cheap, but maybe the best tasting cheap beer out there. They got bought out several times and the recipe changed, apparently for the worse.

“Schlitz. The beer that made Milwaukee famous.”

Who remembers Gene Elston, Loel Passe, and Harry Kallus doing Schlitz commercials for the Astros’ games in the 1960s. Gene and Harry used to do UH PxP football games on the radio in the 1960s.

The never liked Schlitz beer.

Remember Gene and Harry doing the Cougar games. For such a great baseball announcer, I thought Elston was mediocre at best doing football.
