I would think that the fact that Apple is located in Cupertino CA. and they employ lot’s of the PAC schools’ alumni has an impact on their interest.
That’s the same reasoning some had with UCONN and ESPN but that turned into nothing as UCONN heads into obscurity.
I’m not saying it’s not plausible since Nike is all into helping Oregon, but the idea that Apple will pour major money into broadcasting PAC games, when the companies already in the sports broadcasting business aren’t interested, isn’t likely.
IMO the PAC12 is at the bottom of the P5 cartel and rapidly fading, especially in football, for many reasons. It could be argued that the AAC is in fact better in football already. That all being said, you still have to jump on any P5 invite if it were to come. The $$$ is destroying CFB as it has been known and that is a shame to me. If I wanted to attend games with drama queen divas the likes of AB and OBJ and that clown Manziel, with bunch of obnoxious drunks I’d go to NFL games. Please don’t ruin the college game.
Very dumb for the AAC to have signed such a long contract.
There’s no GOR.
Also, surprised nobody’s talking about the end of the article. SEC is losing it’s CBS Saturday primetime.
In addition, if a school intends to leave the AAC it would have to give a 27 month notice and pay $10M. If it wants to leave earlier, the school will have to pay more than $10M
UConn just showed us how much too. 17 mill is what they negotiated.
The problem with the ACC is that they have a long-term TV deal with ESPN. They’d have to convince the network to lose two of its best AAC brands and increase the ACC’s contract. I suppose that’s possible. Not sure how likely. Some have suggested that ESPN would be wise to lure Boise away from the MWC since Fox is that league’s primary partner. No Boise and the MWC isn’t much different from C-USA. Would be great to see UH and Cincy go to the ACC, and then Boise and maybe Air Force and SDSU move to the AAC. But we’ll probably need to wait until '23 for things to start to break. I believe the Big 12 and PAC 12 contracts expire in '24 with the SEC and Big 10 running out in '23. It’ll be interesting to see what happens, but it’s hard to fathom an OU or any major program not wanting to get in on some of the embarrassment of riches in the SEC and Big 10. And if that happens, one would think there’d be a good chance of more movement. .
And to think some people thought it was a mistake for TAM to go to the SEC. They may not win SEC West but they will be launching all the way to the bank. What’s so pathetic is that awful team Vandy will also.
It just goes to show you that money can only do so much for you and then its the coaching and players.
This is the first big bump. Other P5 conferences (Big 12 included) may not see such a huge bump, but will see very large increases as well.
The view that $$$ is destroying CFB is one that fans of schools that aren’t getting the $ are crying about. Schools getting the money don’t care. The problem is that the haves will never see a problem in any system that enriches them. Only the have nots will say the system is broken. Until the haves and those feeding the haves realize and accept that the current system is ultimately engorging itself to destruction, things will not change.
Unfortunately by the time haves realize the system needs to be changed, it’s too late. The system is on the verge of collapse and it’s too late to fix.
The strange thing about the Big 12 is they are making $40M per school and they do not have a conference network. If they did have their own network, they would probably get an additional $10M plus per school which means the Big 12 would be battling for the top revenue spot also.
What say ye for the solution ? I don’t know, it’s way over my head but I don’t think it’s sustainable
for most schools. Are we looking at the P-5 schools breaking away and becoming NFL Lite and rest fall to FCS ?
This is just my opinion, but I don’t think the other schools maintain football indefinitely. They’re bleeding money left and right, and I don’t think that’s sustainable. And even if some of the non-P5 schools did manage to hang around, the gap between them and P5 schools, especially the SEC and Big 10, would be enormous, well beyond even what the chasm is now. I just don’t see how there won’t be some major change down the road. Not sure how conferences like the Sun Belt and bowls that attract 18k for clashes between Liberty and Georgia Southern can survive another 10+ years.
Any sustainable solution would require the P5 to give up some money so that the have nots can at least survive. I just don’t see that happening. The other possibility (equally unlikely) is for the have nots to scale back their ambitions and expenditures on athletics. Giving up money is not acceptable to the P5, scaling back is unacceptable to the G5. Something has to give! Until then the P5 laugh all the way to the bank, the G5 keep “investing” in hopes that a P5 invitation is forthcoming in short order.
The best thing to happen for FBS Div I will be for the cfp and P5 to be sued. As soon as this so called contract/agreement is done it needs to happen.
What legal rights have the P5’s over the G5’s? This only on going contract. That is it. Anything else is/are an assumptions. They have none and they know it. The P5’s are “muscling” their weight around to keep the rest of the FBS Div I down.
The ncaa knows that they can’t break up the FBS Div I. At the same time they are playing the P5’s game. They can’t have it both ways after this contract is done.
The bigger Media contracts for an SEC, BIG10 or ACC will continue but the cfp is the main objective. This is where a lawsuit is more likely to come from if it remains the same and without equal revenue sharing.
In addition the cfp & NYE bowls payouts are major issue. On what legal ground does an FSU make more money than a U of H? Again there is an actual contract. When it ceases any Team making the NYE or cfp shall demand an equal payout for themselves and their conference. I will feel entirely the same way when we re-join a P5.
The feds deemed to act in the basketball agent scandal because it happened/happening across state lines. It is time that some real federal regulations are imposed on FBS Div I. All of the P5’s public School are getting money from you and me through our taxes. How in the world do we know if these funds are not helping P5’s Schools making ends meet? I and you do not know it. Some of you are again going to make assumptions. Again we do not know.
Why are we even having this dialogue? This is total non sense. The very essence of the game is being destroyed for a “quick” buck. Alabama or Clemson wins 20 cfp in a row…so what? The paying and viewing public wont stand this for much longer. Product saturation is around the corner. The only way to kick start it is the dismantling of the cfp and a real National Championship with Conference Winners involved and five at large.
I agree with what you are saying but you and I and everyone else knows there will never be a lawsuit against the CFP governing board of directors especially since there are lots of G5 representation on it.
If threatened, the P5s will create their own division within the NCAA or even their own college association. A lawsuit is never going to happen or it would have happened by now.
Will this TV deal put the Vanderbilts and the Ole Misses ahead of UT and OU after adding in the LHN and OU’s tier 3?
If so, that could spell trouble for the Big 12
That is a great question. IIRC I read that TU and TAMU are the richest CFB teams, think A&M brought in like $175M last year, which is mind boggling. TU isn’t going to stand pat and let others get more $$ through tv than them, that you can bet on.
