We just had one earlier tonight.
Initially yes but the student who was robbed came forward and posted on reddit
I removed my post you replied to because I never want to be the person who questions a victim.
I hope this all gets resolved and people doing bad out there are caught and held accountable.
Question for the group… was an identity ever released on the guy they caught Friday night in connection to the assault in the garage?
I’m very interested to know more. A lot of people are spreading some pretty strong narratives out there based on assumptions.
Right by the welcome center again… thought the UHPD was supposed to have police posted there after the assault?
Nothing wrong with having a CCL. Having one could save your life.
Wtf kind of incompetence is this?!
@uhlaw97 @Lawbert. Is it normal for a DA to not to receive charges of this nature before the 48 hour holding period?
DA offices receive cases whenever the investigating/arresting law enforcement agencies forward them up….whenever that might be.
I don’t think the DA was working at 11 that Friday night. They said arrested but probably didn’t point that the guy was the guy, just someone that looked like the guy then they found it was the guy
There are no excuses for this disgusting incompetence. This p.o.s. was arrested how many times?
I get what you are trying to say. I don’t know when you attended UH, but when I attended I also had classes late in the evening, and it was not the safest, at least not between 1997 and 2001. I will say that when I took some classes in 2005/2006, it was much safer. I think that the area has gone through some ups and downs, all related to the shifting housing situation and gentrification of the area, as well as the relatively weak Houston economy. We have seen the same things happening in Atlanta around Georgia State and Georgia Tech which like UH, are research universities in an urban area. There have been recent attacks on students in parking areas and near student living centers, many of the attacks have been by homeless people, but not all.
Again, my main point was that when I was a student, the UHPD didn’t do much to stop crime; it generally only focused on parking enforcement.
The Harris County DA’s office has folks working intake 24/7. The issue is if there is sufficient evidence to press charges. Friend of mine has worked intake and often worked night shift in his younger years.
Large DA offices like Harris County have an intake division with a night shift.
Small DA offices like mine have at least one DA on call at all times rotationally after hours.
When I’ve been on call, cops have called me at all hours of the night.
There’s no excuse for being released in one day if you’re brought in because you were aggressive with police AND you are a suspect in a sexual assault/robbery case… what a freaking joke.
Exactly. I am sure this is Renu’s #1 agenda since this happened. Explications as stupid as they could be should be demanded by everyone. This is first and foremost about protecting human beings. Nobody can repair what was done but the authorities ought to take actions that this never happens again and that includes releasing scums of the earth like this guy.
I attended between 1989 and 1994. I never had any issues.
My buddy, who was in EE college with me, lived in the 3rd Ward down the street a little way from UH… He got robbed walking home one day while we were studying around 2010.
I expect crimes to happen off campus in the neighborhood surrounding campus, but there should be plenty of security on campus to prevent attacks in garages, or at bus stops.
U of H is basically land locked comparable to many other universities. Obviously actions have to be taken ASAP.
He was let go after the cops were able to identify him by distinct physical features.

And video…
