Shipley's Headquarters

Beignets are great! I would prefer hot beignets and cafe au lait over glazed donuts any time.

Shipley’s is awesome! One of the things I miss most about Houston. All we have in Atlanta is Krispy Kreme (Booooo!!!).

If I could bring Shipley’s and Frenchy’s chicken to Atlanta, I would do it in a heartbeat.

On a more positive note, Whataburger is coming soon :grinning:

The 3rd Ward is the next big real estate boom.

I believe that’s going to be true too. But I’ve been expecting that for over 20 years, and even
the broken clock is right if you wait long enough. I can envision everything inside 610 becoming
the Inner City and hot at some point. Of course a lot of this depends on how the economy lands
post covid.

The center of Harris County now falls right along West 34th Street near Ella Boulevard on the edge of the Oak Forest neighborhood—a suburb from another era of expansion, making it an appropriate nod to the city’s past and the region’s future. (All the more appropriate because Oak Forest was unincorporated at the time development began in the late 1940s.) This spot, according to Census calculations, is Harris County’s center of gravity, sitting amid a very Houstonesque collection of businesses. There’s a bus dealership, a commercial auctioneer, a traffic sign installer, and vegetarian Indian restaurant nearby. Down 34th, there are new coffee shops and restaurants cropping up at new strip centers across the street from a Baptist church, a pawn shop and a used car lot. Oh, and a there’s a Shipley Do-Nuts.

When I was at St Rose of Lima Catholic school back in the late '50’s, we got our Shipley donuts in the morning right after Mass. It was Lemon & Raspberry filled along with plain glazed. They were provided by that location on Ella Blvd. We lived about 2 blocks away on DuBarry Ln. right near Ella Blvd. Used to play in the woods along the RR tracks where Waltrip H.S. was later built in the early 1960’s.

The Krispy Kreme in Portsmouth, VA was just as good as Shipley’s back in the 1960s when I was in the Navy. Our ship was in drydock in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (which is actually in Portsmouth) and they would bring a truckload every day.

They are different styles, but are both good in their own way.

I have heard from some of the older folks that KK was much better back in the day. Now it just tastes so bland. I mean how fresh can donuts be if they sell them by the dozen at a mall Kiosk?

Give me Shipley’s any day. Southern Maid was also good; are they still around?
