SI: Texas Tech could pay out $55 Million NIL

Where is Tech getting this money from? Permian oil wells?

Alumns recently sold their company for over $4B and are pouring it into ttu athletics.

So yes

Texas Tech will ride that horse until it is ready for the glue factory. Ideally, you want multiple BMDs that donate so that you don’t encourage donor fatigue. I think UH has a little donor fatigue with Fertitta expected to fund everything. UH does not have the broad base of BMDs to tap into.

Expect at some point Cody Campbell to burn out and want other BMDs to pick up the slack, especially if Campbell is donating like it is Monopoly money and not getting championships in return.

I know we love to talk down at tech, but they have 60 chapters of their alumni association in Texas. They have 46 outside of Texas and in 3 other countries.

It is more than one bmd. They have a pretty good network. I was surprised when I did a little research.

They have about 30000 alumni association members. About double ours according to the Google.

What’s the ROI? Love? If you don’t win a natty despite overpaying what’s the end game?

Our basketball nil is pretty big. What is the return?

Talking about personally - if I drop 1 mill what am I expecting or getting in return?

I think you big big ego access. Same as it used to be when you donated a million towards a weight room or something, but you get access to the athletes now. You feel important. Straight ego.

I think the point of their spending is for upcoming realignment.

I saw a pilot at Bush Airport today with a TT lanyard. Almost told him something. :joy:

They have a lot more than Campbell money coming in, which is why they’re able to do this. He’s taking the lead, but guys like Terry Fuller, Ed Whitacre (AT&T), James Sowell (investment company) and Dustin Womble (software) have been putting money into athletics for a while. And they have significant non-athletics donors who have carried the load on the academic side.

In addition to the alumni association numbers, they probably have nearly 3x the number of Red Raider Club members that we have in Cougar Pride. Our donors carry a much heavier load because there just aren’t enough of us.

Campbell is not the only donor giving big bucks to Tech. Read an article saying that just three of their big boosters are worth 30 billion. This could last for awhile.

NIL is all a flex…

I envision a Texas Tech BMD video call that goes something like this “Okay, I made the last two big donations, who’s next?” Or “Your turn!”

And still not win any nattys.

But that NIL money can make being in Lubbock a little more palatable for the players.

Let’s put it this way – if you could substantially increase UH’s chances of winning a Big XII championship (not even a national title!) by giving them about 1.5% of what’s in your bank account, how many times would you do that?

I think this is very true.

I think we have them, but they aren’t engaged to the level where giving big money is a priority. It take time and sustained effort to build that base.

Only because we are a national power right now

The kids who want and enjoy the college town vibe, love it there. It’s especially popular with kids from DFW for some reason.
