I was in attendance for the SMU game yesterday. Geat experience overall, some thoughts…
*When we’re on defense the place is rocking. And i get it. Make noise. Make it difficult on the opposing team.
*On offense, the arena gets quiet. The one leading the chants on offense yesterday was Fabians mom usually. Not sure if you could hear her. But i could
So, im just wondering, maybe for next season, our student section can come up with some chants/something to yell while we’re on offense.
When, i watch Gonzaga for example play at Home, the student section will just chant “G-U” repeatedly.
Lol. Ive watched college basketball for 20 years. Just a small thing i noticed.
Our cheerleaders didn’t make much noise. And our student section except on free throws, didnt stand out noise wise. But they showed up in large #s. So not complaining
A small critique on a great fan atmosphere yesterday
I personally like it to be quiet on offense so they can concentrate better. It’s kind of like when you’re looking for something while driving and turn the music down or off. But yes it should be loud every play we’re on defence.
I’m in the student section, I disagree, it’s really loud down there. I can’t even have a conversation with my friends while the game is going on. We have to scream at each other. The student section always has chants with the band. The problem is the rest of the stadium does not participate.
Also it supposed to be quiet on offense, we are at home. That’s the point. We get really loud on defense to throw the other team off. I went to many Baylor games and I promise u our crowd, when we play good teams, can hold up with anyone. Problem is that’s usually only 3-4x a year
Appreciate the post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this…I come from a soccer background, so still getting used to “traditions” per sport (Baseball, Basketball, Football, etc.) and still learning the peculiarities & variations of these in College (ex. tortilla-throwing @ TxTech, Lifting the Cougar Paw when our players are at the FT line, etc).
Personally, I thought it was normal to sorta be quiet when our team is on offense to give them a better chance at communicating on the pitch/court/field. At least, that’s what I thought based on Texan’s games where ppl tend to quiet down when they’re in the huddle.
Haha yeah, I remember how loud I had to yell just to talk with the person next to me, but this was a TDECU for football. Man, wish I had gone to more games and participated in the Student Section back when I was in school…good times.
I was in Section 116. So from my perspective, on defense every one is into. Students, common fan. Everybody.
Offense, yes its supposed to get quiet. But something was missing…. Dont cheerleaders do their chants when we have the ball?
Ill watch Duke or Gonzaga on YouTube and see what they do when their team has the ball
Not trying to copy them. But maybe pick-up some things to share here on CoogFans
@Kmoney. Not criticizing the student section at all. So if it came across that way, my bad. Students were great yesterday…Loved the “Big12 Rejects” sign
Don’t compare us to Duke that’s just not even fair . But yeah the big difference is that the students and rest of the stadium are not in sink. Students only take up 20% of the stadium we need everybody else to join in. When we do the “all about the Cougars” chant. I looked around the arena and literally only the students were waving their arms. I could see a little sprinkle of hardcore coogs fans in the crowd that know what to do. But the outside of the students it wasn’t much participation going on.
I remember during the Herman games for football the WHOLE stadium would join in and it looked awesome, it would give me chills. Everyone was yelling “Who’s F****ing House”. We still do a great job of getting really loud during our basketball games, but as far as chants, the none students are going to have to join in if we want to look like those big schools
Can’t stand the obscene part of the chant. It’s classless but I am thankful when the students show up in mass.
Let’s see how Tuesday night goes.
Talk in’ bout them Coogs!
I take zero issue with your critique of the chant. Maybe us alums could take it as a challenge to drown out the students. Imagine how loud the place would be then.
I’ve gone to a number of away basketball and football games… And to some other schools’ games. Seems like a lot have a very simple chant that doesn’t include singing… Although womp womp does sound and look awesome when done right.
Idk how many times I heard BYU, BYU, BYU or UC, UC, UC at games… Simple yet effective.
So yeah, I do want to see some offense chants. We do let’s go cougars most of the time or go Coogs go because any ‘comic’ chants (such as big 12 rejects are hard to start).
The sign was CV3s too lol.
Anyway, I was in 109 that game. Woke up late and didn’t make it to court side. I could see the floor going absolutely wild during it.
When we hold up the sign saying it’s the FC not a Library, we mean it. The atmosphere will sell and it will get eyes to our games.
Also ever since that sign made it’s debut, it’s been louder and louder. Keep it up this week.
But yeah, student section does do it. The floor, mainly and the band. But they aren’t coordinated. The rest of 109, and the general pop don’t seem to do much.
I help and oddly enough I see quite a few fans doing the womp!
As far as crowd participation, especially the elderly alums I would like to see more Eat’emup chants during the game.
And I have no problem the crowd getting rowdy when we come up court offensively but become silent when we shoot free throws.
Lordy please quiet then lol
