SMU Players to Sit Out, Keep Redshirt, Enter Portal

UNIVERSITY PARK – SMU sophomore wide receiver Roderick Daniels Jr. and senior safety Chace Cromartie will sit out the rest of the season with intentions to enter the transfer portal, multiple SMU staff members with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Dallas Morning News.

College players are able to redshirt a season if they haven’t played in more than four games. The Mustangs will play their fifth game of the season at UCF on Wednesday… In the transfer portal era, players who have not exceeded four games played and who haven’t used their redshirt could preserve a season and find a new home after the season. The transfer portal window will last 45 days this season starting the first day after the national championship.

This is sad. Really sad. And the NCAA has no power or wants to do anything.

It’s ridiculous to let these players hold this crap over their teams and universities, the NCAA needs to put a stop to this nonsense , those players should automatically be kicked off scholarship and have to pay for the rest of the semester that would stop a lot of it

Well, boohoo. They brought in players via the portal and will lose players via the portal. I’m sure they didn’t worry about the schools from whom they got portal players, I don’t worry about SMU. I don’t even like SMU, they can take their arrogance and stick it.

Whoa! This is scary. Weren’t these players getting paid $36k ?

Just got thru listening to the most recent FTS show from yesterday, and it was brought up how a source “close to the program” mentioned that Holggi has lost the locker room. Perhaps proof is that McCaskill liked a Tweet saying that Holggi’s offense sucked…hope we’re not the next team to have to announce stuff like this.

I think we were the team that started it. Thanks King.

Perhaps.

But to me this is different since they were allegedly getting paid $36k by SMU. So how would that work…do you get to keep that $$$, pay it back?

I’m more concerned with having our current group of players doing the same thing. After all, this is one of the more talented rosters our program has ever seen.

This isn’t just an SMU problem, guess u have a hard o for them. This goes beyond SMU.

OK, it’s nationwide – and we get players from the portal and lose players to the portal. It’s just the way it is, and I have no problem with it. Any other student on campus – including students on scholarship – can transfer at will, now players have the same right. How is that wrong?

Always love a chance to make fun of SMU, but those two guys aren’t really playing anyway. They are trying to save a year of eligibility because they fell down the depth chart. Daniels only has 2 catches, both in game 1 of the season. Cromartie has 4 tackles mostly playing special teams. Two others are redshirting, but haven’t said if they will transfer. Another guy who doesn’t play is one, but Nwokobia would be a loss for SMU if he transfers.

I think its especially smart for Cromartie if he has his degree because he can go play somewhere next year and get a free year towards a masters. Not going to hate on a kid for using the system to get a free year of college and a chance to finish his career actually playing.

Ruins depth this year but more so, the coming years.

Thats the issue, players are expecting to see guaranteed NIL money but also want ro transfer. Something is going to give

What’s wrong is that they are refusing to play more than 4 games in the season to preserve the redshirt.

With NIL don’t think you can tie pay to play

Yep, that is unsustainable and unfair to the schools. They in effect paid them for the season…eventually schools will start demanding their money back.

This is the way it will go for another year or three before any changes are implemented. “The system” has to allow this to go full on wild west before applying policies to police it. Same thing when the TV contracts were expanded back in the late 90s and created the BCS.

Yeah, only a coach can decide to redshirt perfectly good players after four games to save their eligibility for next year…shoot this isn’t new, Dana started this 3 years ago.

If NIL is paid monthly, seems like those payments would stop once you announce you’re leaving. Also, I’d cover their scholarship through the fall and then they’re on their own. I assume they’re off the team once they make that call because I’d want to play guys who are sticking with my team.

Agreed, it’s getting scary out there a month before Halloween…
I have said it before, the Portal and the NIL is sucking the life out my love for college sports.
It ain’t what it used to be and never will be.
