I wonder why they would make a move like this so early in the season? Maybe it is because Arkansas beat them by 15 yesterday and the powers that be at SC care about their once proud baseball program. One could learn a lot from that mentality!
The powers to be are not going to embarrass Whitting at this point by firing him in the middle of the season. All is lost already and nothing is going to be gained by appointing an interim coach. Although a very bad coach, he has been a good representative of the program in general and has a very dedicated representatives within the athletic department.
I don’t think there’s any question that he has gone after this season though
It’s still basketball season, so the AD doesn’t have time for that kind of stuff. ![]()
But seriously, there’s no point in making that move unless there’s someone else lined up. Just take what you signed up for when you decided to stick with him at the end of last year. The guys are at least competing.
Actually you would be announcing to the country that the job was open….its a very coveted job, this is fact, not opinion.
You would start getting calls and be able to sift through interest….you might get a surprise or two.
You could also start getting a recruiting plan in place and be ready to hit the ground running.
But it’s probably better not to hurt anyone’s feelings….i mean it’s D-1 Big 12 baseball….its not like it’s serious or anything…
I mean, you can dream and all, but it ain’t gonna happen. ![]()
It’s better to run the program into the ground. Rack up as many losses as possible. Demoralize what fans and players are left. And give HS recruits something to joke about when their friends gets recruited by UH.
I wouldn’t can him right now. Hell Nunez probably thinks UH is getting the #1 draft pick because of this.
The baseball program has been an embarrassment to the university for too long now. Cut him loose.
Announce to the college baseball coaching world that the position is open.
Early bird gets the worm.
Nah, Whitting is a Coog. He’s one of our own. Let him finish his UH career this season.
I’ve known Paul for nearly 20 years, and he should never have taken that job (it should never have been offered). He’s an ill fit for today’s game.
USCe did not compete in the SEC during his time. They won 3 weekend games in the SEC last year (I don’t think they ever won a Sunday game), and they’re 0-5 this season. That’s 6-29 in the league. You cannot do that at a program like South Carolina.
Replacing Cruz mid-season last year seems to be working for Rice. Their last top 100 finish was Graham’s last year. Their best finish since then was 143 Bragga’s first year as HC. As of now, Pierce has their RPI rank in the 60’s.
