Special Teams?

I was just looking at the directory here: http://www.uhcougars.com/staffdir/hou-staffdir.html and here: http://www.uhcougars.com/sports/m-footbl/m-footbl-coaches.html

Where is our special teams coach?

Major said he intends to split the ST duties amongst a couple of the coaches.

Does any other CFB team follow the same approach?

Colorado, Arkansas, UCLA

It
um
it usually doesn’t work very well

I hope it isn’t our fatal flaw this year.

TAM has reassigned Larry Jackson and hired a new Strength Coach.
Wonder if there is room on staff for Jackson.

I would agree. I don’t like what Major has done with this facet of the game.
Just hire a dedicated ST coach, man.

Special Teams duties are usually handled by Co-OC or by a TE Coach. I am rather perplexed. It should not be handled by a “couple of Coaches” Everybody has to held accountable.
It is a huge part of the game at any level. Getting regularly a great field position does wonder same for covering.

Slow your roll fellas. Most teams go this way. Not unusual at all. Herman oversaw the entire punt team, for example. Washington, Christian before him, and even Levine all mainly coached other positions (time wise) besides their ‘special teams coach status’. Of the 3 only Levine was true expert of special teams and able to teach and coach in extreme detail. There are maybe a dozen or so of his ability in all on D1. Many of the others are overrated and/or still learning on the fly.

And I can tell you from experience, the best way to deal with the 3 specialists is to recruit good ones, give them tools to self-analyze, and get out of their way. ST’s coaches that meddle with their technique are the worst.

I wouldn’t sweat this one too much, all that it means is that CMA is delegating different parts of ST’s play throughout his staff. For example, I bet the Oline coach overseas FG/PAT line formations. Mack Brown did it this way at UT with Stacey Searels. Worst case, you miss out on some of the more elaborate trick play stuff, but how many of those things have you seen over the past few seasons?

How’s that “Black Death” summer training routine been working out for the Aggies the past few seasons? They come out strong and fade hard down the stretch. Why does Jackson and his program get a pass in culpability there?
