EPA/play (Expected Points Added per play) is an efficiency metric in football analytics: it’s the average change in a team’s expected points from before to after each snap, averaged over all plays. Expected points is the points a team is projected to score on a drive given its down, distance, and field position, so a play’s EPA is EP after − EP before (e.g., a 15-yard pass that lifts a drive from 1.06 to 1.92 expected points is worth +0.86 EPA ).
